solarscar Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 Some of my favorite places to fish are foot traffic only, so I have to go light. I would like to get a small 10ft jon, use only oars and have a small folding anchor... The catch is that I will have to haul this about 3 miles on average somehow (gravel roads). I have seen a jon a few years back on top of someones vehicle that had wheels on it... I'm even thinking about putting wheels on it and somehow hauling it with a d**n mountain bike... Is any of this possible and can someone please give me some tried and true options for doing a project like this? Much appreciation! Quote
solarscar Posted October 11, 2009 Author Posted October 11, 2009 i'm brainstorming here..... I wonder if I could strap a wheel barrel under the jon in sweet balance spot?? hmmm..... I'm a small guy and would prefer to be able to haul it via a bike maybe.. Anyone done such a thing? Quote
nashua fisherman Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 my 10' jon weights 75 pounds. wouldnt want to carry it too far. have you thought about getting a kyak? most of the cheep ones ive seen weigh around 40 pounds. you could get a strap and carry it like a guitar. just an idea. Quote
solarscar Posted October 11, 2009 Author Posted October 11, 2009 I haven't looked into Kayaks, but did own a folding one once (tote n boat) and it sucked ***. If you went an inch off center line, it was going over and jackie chan wouldn't be quick enough to correct it! I fell in 40 degree water, thankfully close to the bank, sold that d**n thing on ebay. I want to do this jon project and figure if I can outfit it will temporary wheels on the back, I could easily, manually haul it and to make it quicker, somehow haul it behind a mountain bike???? wagn Posted October 11, 2009 Posted October 11, 2009 You can buy or build something like this. http://www.wheeleez.com/kayakcanoecart-tuff-tire.php There are cheaper versions out there, this is just the first one I could find. I built a dolly for my bass raider boat a couple of years back. They worked pretty good. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted October 12, 2009 Super User Posted October 12, 2009 When I was 13, I put my 10' jon on 2 skateboards and pushed it down the road for a couple miles. It wasn't easy though. Quote
Super User .dsaavedra. Posted October 12, 2009 Super User Posted October 12, 2009 if you build your own little cart for it, use large diameter wheels, like bicycle wheels. less effort on your part. Quote
Super User Grey Wolf Posted October 12, 2009 Super User Posted October 12, 2009 Inflatable one man pontoon boat . Weighs less than 50 lbs. Tear it down and you can take it anywhere. Quote
MSPbass Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Google "boat dolly" and you'll find a few different products. Do it in Google Images for a quick idea of what's out there. Quote
done Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 I could see rigging up a sheet of ply with some sort of dolly rig under it with larger tires. Then you can just strap it down with bungees for the walk down/up the trail. Since you will likely be leaving it on the shore while you go out, don't make it too expensive or someone will get tempted to borrow it. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 12, 2009 Super User Posted October 12, 2009 What ever you devise, you will want the wheels as close to the balance point as possible. This is a big weakness in the kayak cart I use. That boat is easily a couple hundred pounds loaded up, and its a bit of effort getting anywhere. Quote
done Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 crap...that thing have a fridge in it too? Satellite TV? LOL. Quote
