Not sure what to use it for.  I hardly fish offshore, so deep cranking is out of the question.  I could see using it for slow rolling chatterbaits, but not much else.  I'm a 7 speed guy, so I'm wondering if there's a bait or presentation that would benefit from a much slower gear ratio.

It's a really nice reel and I don't want it to sit in the cave for months.

Anything you want to use it for. That was a common speed or even higher speed for a lot of years and a lot of bass have been caught on reels with a 5 gear ratio.

My go-to reel is a Curado 200 PG (power gear) in 5.5:1. I can use it for everything. I have higher gear ratio reels, but for convenience, not necessity.       jj

I currently use a 5 speed reel on a 6’-10” rod with smaller square bills and have good luck with this setup.

Large spinnerbaits, chatters, swimbaits, A-rigs, and anything else fished slow all the way back.

Surely, you don’t think those fish will know the difference right?

So no math in the schools?..... :)

Same here. It might just be me, but I feel that sensitivity is increased with slower reels and this really helps when trying to avoid getting hung up on weeds

You can use it for lures you want to move slow, but I would pull it out if you find yourself cranking in baits excessively fast, you might need to use a slower reel if your not used to moderating your reel speed with a higher speed reel.

It's funny cuz I do think that I am a speed retriever, despite using high gear ratios.  I definitely think a 5.2 will help by letting me do fast retrieves with less IPT, along with increased torque for those high resistance baits

Thanks guys!

I use a 5 gear ratio for all my resistance lures. Spinnerbait, chatterbaits, all crankbaits, A-rigs.

I even prefer slower gear ratios on my spinning reels.

It's hard for them to write out the sums cause the paper just tears when it gets wet.

I too prefer lower ratio reels for crankbaits for this reason.  It seems like they allow you to stop quicker when you bump into something.  Though, it's not mandatory.

Though, honestly, there isn't much I wouldn't throw on a 5.2 reel, other than a buzzbait.

Today, I tried out the reel with chatters and spinnerbaits with both blade types and combinations.  My final thought is that it wasn't very comfortable.  I guess I like to have a faster pace for moving baits and it was the added fatigue of trying to keep that speed with such a low ratio that led me to dislike it for those situations.

However, the reel is of good quality with an aluminum frame, casts pretty smooth, and has dual braking, so it will definitely stay in my backup bag for tournaments, should the right situation show.

Thanks for the help, glad to have found a place for the reel!

I used mine for 4"-5" hollow belly swimbaits. It is easy to overwork those baits with a faster IPT.

Also slow rolling Colorado blade spinnerbaits or moving those football jigs slow in deep water.
