I have this nice shimano curado 201 that was made in like 2015 or something. It runs really smooth it can get 35-50 yard casts with the right lure. Unfortunately though, when I was bank fishing I believe that when I went to go land the fish in the water the reel may have accumilated some dirt. Because now whenever I reel in when I have a lure tied on it makes a scratchy sound, but when I have the reel off the rod and the spool taped it doesnt make noise when I reel it. This leads me to believe that it has something to do with the worm gear and line distributor part. Keep in mind that when I put oil on one of the little rods that the line distributor thing moves on, the sound fades a bit. But when I reel it 10 mins later the sound comes back. Does anyone know what part might have some dirt accumilated and could help me?

Sounds like the level-wind worm gear is dirty

Location - the mechanism rides on the worm-gear.

Baitcast Fishing Reels

What it looks like un-assembled

Amazon.com: Penn Reel Part - 42-320N Levelwind 320GT 320GT2 320LD 321GT 321GT2 - Worm: Sports & Outdoors

Just a good spray with alcohol a brush with a medium-stiff hobby brush to clean it...then some oil. Shouldn't have to take the reel apart to do this.

Ok this may be the problem, sorry for the misconception I just posted, but I believe it not to be the line guide/ worm gear system, because when I tape the reel and take it off the rod and reel it makes the scratchy noise still. this has led me to believe that it may be some sort of internal problem in the sealed off part of the reel like the gears. I have another one of the reel and I tried putting that ones spool in the reel with the problem and the same thing happened. I put the spool of the reel with the problem in the reel without the problem and it wasnt making noise. So I believe its somethingthat has nothing to do with the brakes, nothing to do with the worm gear/ line guide, and maybe nothing to do with the spool tension. I talked with my dad and he said it may just be something that I will have to cope with because he said if everything is running smooth, but theres a noise, it might not require a whole lot of time finding out whats the problem, and what I need to clean.

Ya - some reels are noisy out of the box - my President and even one of my Fuego CT reels are a bit noisy.

Long as everything is working properly...then I wouldn't worry it...it's just a minor annoyance.

Take it apart and oil and grease it.  I take my reels apart and clean them, a couple times a year depending on how dirty they get.  As you take it apart you should lay out the parts, in the order you took them off. DO NOT just throw them in a pile.

Abu Garcia reel oil, Penn Reel grease, and q-tips work for me, make sure you remove any little fibers that come off the q-tips though.  The oil and grease are available at Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops.

If you haven't cleaned and relubricated it since 2015, it's past due for some maintenance.  So I'd start there.  It'll also give you a chance to inspect the bearings and make sure they're all still in good condition.  When they go bad, they can sometimes make grinding sounds.

If you DIY this, watch a few videos first and download the schematic for your reel.  Also, take pictures with a digital camera of each piece before you remove it so you'll not only know where it goes when it comes time to reassemble it, but you'll know which orientation it goes in.  They're not particularly hard to work on yourself, but if you've never been inside one before, it's pretty easy to get lost or put it back together wrong without knowing it.  But if you take your time and pay attention, it's something most anyone can do.

That worm gear still turns with the reel off of the rod.

On some reels you can remove the PAWL (the part that rides in the groves) without taking the reel apart. Sometimes it with pick up a bit of dirt, or sand and just hang on to it running it up and down the gear.

That's the Pawl. Brian.

If there’s no noise in free spool, the spool and brakes can be ruled out. It’s impossible to diagnose sight unseen. Is the noise at a certain point in the handle revolution or line guide travel? Is it more, less or the same under load? If the symptoms came on suddenly something is not right. Ignoring it may cause more damage needlessly. 6 yrs is way over due for service. $40 in 6yrs for service and shipping is $7/yr. worthwhile on a $200 investment I’d think. Let me know if I can help you.

If you used this reel around or in saltwater that adds whole nother element to the puzzle > salt corrosion.  Again,  I would have it cleaned. Also I don't think this reel is really saltwater compatible. You might be able to rinse it with freshwater, not a dunk under water though.   This will get the surface salt and help with stopping getting more inside.
