walt-14 Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 Planning on trying an old gravel pit in the coming days that I’ve never fished before. I’m told there aren’t a lot of brush piles, rocks, or trees anywhere in the water. Sounds like it’s mainly semi-steep drops off from the shallow areas. Im not overly experienced in fishing these drop offs (I assume this is where the fish will be if they aren’t up shallow). I usually target fish around some sort of structure. Any suggestions on what to target these fish with as far as lures go? And is there any thing else that I should be looking for that may hold fish? Last thing to keep in mind, I’m fishing from shore so obviously that will have quite an impact. Quote

Super User jimmyjoe Posted April 26, 2021 Super User Posted April 26, 2021 Find where water flows in, or where brush or grass overhangs the water's edge. Those areas support microscopic life that in turn supports fish. I use a small spinner or small spoon, probably at 8-12 feet in daytime and shallower under poor light conditions. I have seen fishermen who regularly target gravel and sand pits. Many use slip bobber rigs in deep pits. The problem in deep pits is that fish seem to "raft", or congregate in schools, and then cruise in a pattern that seems aimless to us but is, I am sure, methodical to the fish. Fishermen who target shallow pits seem to prefer ned rigs or wacky-rigged senkos. jj Quote
