Barrel swivels...

...so, I'm looking to start using barrel swivels between my Sufix 832 10lbs and my inline spinners, for small river (wading) fishing. 

I have always had good luck with 1/8oz Rooster tails in this application, but I notice that I am getting a good bit of fraying from the rocky structures, along with a lot of line twist. This is causing me to retie pretty often and waste deep in water...it can be a pain.

 

So, I am thinking of adding a #12(20lbs) bearing swivels and maybe a foot to 18" of flouro.

 

School me on barrel swivels...what you use, what has worked and maybe a couple of flouro line options in the 6-8lbs range.

   I will not use barrel (Crane) swivels. They are not useless, but not far off from it, either. I use only ball bearing swivels. In the last 20 years, quality of ball bearing swivels has dropped, and consistency has gone by the wayside, so I can't give you specific brands, but I usually get good results from VMC.

  

   That being said, nothing .... and I mean nothing ....  can TOTALLY prevent twist between in-lines and braid. Spinners have too much residual friction and braid has too low a resistance to axial twist. All you can do is reduce the problem, not eliminate it.                   jj

I use Spro barrel swivels on 2 of my spinning rigs (dropshot and senko rods). I first tried really small ones until 1 time i knocked the insert out of the rod tip. Now i use bigger ones that cannot go thru the tip. (although if you "crash" the tip it could still happen.) I haven't thrown an in-line spinner for decades, but if i were to, i would use a sampo b.b. swivel. Leader length may make a difference depending on lure weight, or maybe not, that's for you to figure out.  A Mepps agaila #0 undressed  was the first lure i ever bought.

Spro Power Swivels 100%; for fluoro Sunline FC Sniper or Seaguar Tatsu are the gold standards.

Use the smallest size size spro barrel swivel. Size 10 35lb

I can't complain about the SPRO ball bearing swivels.   I have a couple of boxes of in line spinners that I use mostly for white bass and I just put a ball bearing swivel on each one, then I don't have to mess with clips or snaps with my fumbling arthritic hands.  This winter I bought some 3/8 oz in line spinners that I'm going to throw in places where I normally throw lipless cranks and I went ahead and put ball bearing swivels on each one of those.

 

As far as the barrel swivels go, I don't see a situation where I might use one.   I think all the ones that I have are in the "BIG BOX OF USELESS GEAR" that sets on a shelf in my fishing shed.  (  Yeah, that is what it's labeled on the shelf )

Spro size 10 are the way to go!

I wouldn’t use a swivel to join leader to braid, use a knot and avoid damaging the rod guides.

Inline spinners like Blue Fox, Mepps, Panther Martin etc use a size 12 black Berkley Cross Lok swivel clip to change lures easily. Otherwise you should add small split ring to attach a swivel. The extra hardware has no performance affect on Inline spinners.

I try to use the smallest swivels possible because sometimes trout will hit the swivel instead of the spinner. A larger swivel tends to tempt the trout more than a small one.

That said, i like the owner micro swivels in size 14. These swivels are super tiny. Honest thought any small swivel should work.

Like you,  i place the swivel 12 to 18 inches above my snap. I also use the smallest size possible for the snap.

I am using micro swivels, I don't know what number but they are really small, and I use InvizX about 10" reader.
