Koey Jong Posted April 24, 2021 Posted April 24, 2021 I was thinking about grabbing a shimano genpu 201pg that’s going for $110 for some light swim baiting roughly around 1-3 ounce swim baits. I wanted to see what y’all opinions are on this reel and if it would hold up against 1 to 3 ounce swimbaits. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted April 25, 2021 Super User Posted April 25, 2021 Welcome to BR! Looks like a nice saltwater reel that should handle 1-2oz no problem. Once you get to 3 oz your rod is probably a bigger concern, but if that's the top of your weight range you should be fine with a 200 size reel such as that genpu. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted April 25, 2021 Super User Posted April 25, 2021 I agree, the 200 size reel will be just fine. I have thrown my 3 1/8 oz glide bait with my 200 sized reels, while a 300 would be better, the 200 gets the job done. BTW, welcome to BR.. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 25, 2021 Super User Posted April 25, 2021 Never heard of the GenPu reel and had to look it up. Shimano entry level inshore reel w/5.1:1 gearing and deep spool. Interesting Shimano used a diecast aluminum spool for salt water use? No mention of gear material, very important for casting heavy lures. Tom Quote
VolFan Posted April 25, 2021 Posted April 25, 2021 I would think that reel would work but only be a short-term, light duty, temporary solution. Quote
