Mikerblanco1995 Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 New to the forums, sorry if this is in the wrong section... was just wondering if anyone could guess the approximate weight of this bass I caught today. My scale wasn’t working and didn’t want to keep her out of the water trying to fix it. Thanks in advance. 1 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted April 23, 2021 Super User Posted April 23, 2021 Did you get any measurements? Length? Girth? Quote

Super User Solution MN Fisher Posted April 23, 2021 Super User Solution Posted April 23, 2021 It's gonna be tough - it's at an angle, we have nothing more than your hand for comparison...best I can come up with is between 2# and 4#. If you click on my avatar you'll go to my profile...click on the pic there and it gives you a larger view...that one is 3.94# Quote

Super User DitchPanda Posted April 23, 2021 Super User Posted April 23, 2021 Caught one today that looked very comparable and she weighed 3 1\2 on the dot...so that's my guess 1 Quote
Fallser Posted April 23, 2021 Posted April 23, 2021 It's hard to tell with the angle. I caught this one and didn't have a scale, and my tape measure was somewhere in my fishing vest. Fortunately, there was someone who had watched me land the fish who took a couple of pictures. If he hadn't been there I probably would have laid it against my fly rod and would have had a better estimate of the length and girth. The fish is held close to my body. There's a hemostat hanging down below the fish that's 6 inches long, the fly in it's mouth is about 2 inches. The guesstimate was 21 inches, girth 11 inches, approximate weight 5 lbs. I now have tape measure and a digital scale in my vest that are in an easy reach. In case I get lucky again this year. 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted April 23, 2021 Super User Posted April 23, 2021 Terrible angle for fishtimating, but based on the hand and mouth, which are about the only things on the same plane in the photo, and the fish being a bit on the fat side, I'm gonna say 3 3/4- 4 lbs. 7 hours ago, Fallser said: It's hard to tell with the angle. Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 25, 2021 Super User Posted April 25, 2021 I caught a TON of 5 lbers until I started weighing them. I would say that is a solid 2 lb fish all day This is a 4-08 BTW, actually weighed, not just estimated. 1 Quote

I spent a lot of time with my IS shipmates going over photograph analysis while killing time out at sea. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 26, 2021 Super User Posted April 26, 2021 I wasn't referring to the pic the OP posted. Check my post again. In fact, I was referring to the pic that you too quoted and said "There is that much gravity in PA?... " Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted April 26, 2021 Super User Posted April 26, 2021 Eh, does it really matter? Unless you've broken a state record, and even then, what do you get? A special Lollipop? I caught a slob a week and a half ago, and my scale's batteries were dead. I'll never know. My buddy was there, freaking out, and took a really nice horizontal pic. Sent the pic to my bros and they were all chirping. I had the fight, got the snapshot, and will always have the memory. Caught a nice 5.42 a few days later. Felt pretty much the same about it during and afterwards, thrilled, except that I was alone and there were no high fives or fist bumps to celebrate. A hanging picture never does the fish justice, but you can tell it's a good one anyway. My XL fist provides context for those who know me personally. Good enough. Quote
The Bassman Posted April 26, 2021 Posted April 26, 2021 I use to take pics of most all of my bigger bass. Then I scrolled through my phone gallery and realized how redundant they were. Yes, I get a thrill when I catch a big one (over 4 for me) but I'm out there alone and truthfully have as much fun getting on a good bite with fish that are much smaller. Quote

Every bass my Grandson catches is 5lbs... He says so? 1 Quote
