I know there is already a thread on this but I’d like some more info. I’m not asking for a specific just which is better the lip grip or the hook that goes up the gills?

Lip-grip - unless you're precise in using the hook, you can damage the fishes gills.

I modded my hook to be a lip-grip - changed out the hook for a carabiner that my Rapala grips clip into for weighing.

The lip grip is best. I have seen fish flop off the hook and there is no chance of damage to the gills with the grip.

I use the rapala lip gripper on a cheap luggage scale

Problem with that one - even using the gripper and hanging that on the scale hook - fish can still flop around enough to drop off. That's why I use the carabiner.

I research a lot about it last month, Lip Gripper and scale.

1- I like the mechanical, so nothing bulky and need battery. The reason for that is I Catch a fish and it was big and I wanted ti weight and found out I am out of battery.

2- I want to use it for everything including stripers, So I needed something at least 50lb.

3- I wanted something from relieble, yet not pricy brand.

Combined all of the above, I Came to Rapala mechanical scale/gripper. Very hard to find but worthy to look for.

You don’t need a scale, just post a picture on here and ask for guesses. It’s a tradition

That is a 50 lb scale with a 1lb increment, so about 1/2 lb is as close I you can hope to capture, and if you are trying to weigh a bass under 5 lbs or so, I doubt it will be even that accurate.

A 50 lb scale isn't big enough to weigh striped bass, not out east anyway... :)

I have digital Rapala as well , but usually want it for bigger fish and emergency. I wish we had those stripers here in SoCal.
