Over the winter months I booked 3 day fishing trips on various lakes starting in early April.

Did the same thing last year and had a blast, fishing all day and spending time with the wife.

This year not so much.

70's all week and each time I've arrived at a given lake, a monster cold front arrives with us.

Yet again this coming Thursday when we depart for the lake.......78* yesterday, 40's Thursday and lows into the 20's with gusty winds.

No, I don't get mad but starting to think that I may have super natural powers and that I can actually dictate the weather.

I'm going to test that theory as the days pass, something like this.

Load my boat  = wind picks up

Throw in a baitcaster  = temps plunge

Add a spinning real = high winds, unseasonably cold.

Drive to lake  = unfishable conditions.

And lastly !

Leisure day, get on Bass resources  = unseasonably warm, calm and the wife wants me to spend all day with her shopping thrift shops.

Ahhh life is good.

Yeah, that's been this year for me as well.  Since November, there have been a total of 6 days with winds below 25mph that fell on weekends for me.  I've managed to go fishing all 6, and every time but one (in late February), the calmer winds were due to a cold front passing through the day before.  That one day in February had water temperatures in the 40's, so getting bass to bite was none easier.

C'est la vie.  Maybe all of this bad weather will relieve some of the fishing pressure and lead to a killer fall.

It just comes in cycles.  I had 3 good weekends in a row in March.  Then, I had a week off for a fishing trip and a massive cold front hit.  I feel your pain.

Same here. I looked back at some pics from last year up to this point and it makes me sick thinking about this year so far.

I have often whined here pretty hard about what mother nature has asked me to fish in.

However, even with this mostly unprecedented early open water,

I've been pretty lucky so far.

And it looks like it could get even better here in the next couple of weeks.

So I'm just going to drop a little "Thank You" right here . . . .

Murphy’s law is real. I catch a skunk every single time I’m supposed to go do something social after work . Not just some of the time, every single time.

Yeah, guess I should have a little cheese with the whine.

I've fished this lake before and it has good submerged cover that I could concentrate on with the cold front BUT how does a person deal with the forecasted 40 mph wind gusts.......bank fish a 5oz jig maybe. Lol

Still going but told the wife to bring a deck of cards and plenty of wine.

Lily pad fields that were well defined by this time last year are barely showing themselves, if at all. Very few weeds are up except in areas with good flow. The cold snaps have put us way behind. I have zero catches on topwater up to this point. Last year they were "the thing" starting in early March. Tonight we're getting 35* and 20mph NW winds with 25mph gusts which will definitely shock the shallow spawning flats and send them back out again with a case of lockjaw. Bass fishing closes for the spawn here beginning on May 1st.  Hoping for one last rally once over night temps stabilize.

I firmly believe that fronts seem to have an uncanny ability to know my fishing schedule... say uummm, you by chance aren’t visiting Virginia anytime soon are you?? ??

Yes.....unfortunately.

Leaving in the morning for our 3rd trip and still packing overalls, down jackets and toboggan.

Last weekend on Lake Robertson, only had to fight 50's and 30 mph winds and did manage to catch 2 fish on DS between gusts.

Woke up to a wind advisory this morning. So I only spent 7 hours bobbing around in my little boat today. It sure is fun trying to keep the truck between the lines headed home after a day of that.

That's my usual spring time pattern.  I just keep the rain suit and coat in the car because I got tired of taking them in the house, then bringing them back out.

April is a notoriously chaotic weather month. It’s the month I thank God for Trout, Yellow Perch, Chain Pickerel, Sunfish and Bullheads.

They all keep me occupied until the Bass come out to play.

Sometimes you just get a couple of hours early.  Take what she gives you.  Don't fight with mother nature, that's a game you can't win!  It took me a long time to realize that.

I can relate friend. All week long at work there’s not a cloud in the sky with mid to high 70’s temps. My days off are 70-100% chance of rain all day long each day. It’s been that way the last month. My wife and I are expecting too with an August birthdate so my fishing time is winding down right now and she and I have been trying to get to the water and wet some hooks before then. We all know a lot of time goes into the care of a child so I’m fairly certain that some time around August I’ll be hanging up my rods and reels for the season which I’m not complaining about at all. Mother Nature just isn’t making it easy lol

Wednesday was like a cold hurricane all day long. Temps dropped to 34 over night. Stayed in because the wind gusts were impossible to deal with. Real feel temps were 34 last night when I got there, and the all day long winds died nearly completely. The swarms of gnats went where ever gnats go during a cold snap which meant there were no bats flying around eating them. Not a single bait fish popped on the surface to eat them either. Dead as a doornail. A single crappie on a small wake saved me from the walk of shame.

Saturday night should be a banger here though. Two days of stable temps, cloudy, S winds, and rain coming in late. Perfect. My brother was able to switch days, so we'll get out on the boat. This spring has only allowed that once so far. Stoked.

Some years the weather just sucks. As a very young boy we perch fished Lake Erie a lot. One year sticks out in my mind. I think we went out maybe 2-3 times all year in the boat.
Every weekend was white capped.
We fished from shore a lot. Didn’t catch much.

Friday was a good day, for last week. We agreed to meet at the lake at 8:30, so at 7:30 I loaded my gear in the truck and at 7:45 I scraped the heavy frost off the windshield. It was 34*F.

It warmed up to 60 by mid-afternoon and the winds were down to 10 or 15 on the small lake.

Cold fronts and taking time off to fish...name a more iconic duo. Here I sit while 45 degree rain pours out of the sky, while this coming week is gonna be in the 70s. Hmmmmm.

May be an image of snow

It's been snowing here on & off the last two days.

While I generally do not fish in that, for once you know who's not complaining about it ?

This guy.

Because we've had open water for almost a month (which is crazy),

the colder temps might prolong the pre-spawn bite some,

and when I have been able to get on the water,

there's been carnage !

The weather at my favorite lake has been exactly the same for the past 3 months.  Low of 60 degrees, high of 84 no clouds, light east winds in the morning, no wind for an hour at noon, and strong winds from the west in the afternoon.  Same exact thing every day, and I can still manage to pick the wrong day to go fishing.
