On the way home from Lake Menderchuck Sunday evening, as an emergency vehicle approached (ambulance, siren & lights a flashing),

IAW state regulations, I pulled off to the side of a rather rural road & stopped my rig.

After it passed and I resumed my travels, we had a problem.

Passenger Side Trailer Tire had suffered catastrophic failure; bummer.

(Picked up a 6 inch section of angle iron.)Damaged Trailer Tire ~

I'm ready for this but not a fan of installing the spare on a two lane roadside at dusk.

Fortunately I replaced it without incident nor was I run down by a "texter".

The Carlisle Radial Trail HD Trailer Tires are the original set from 2016,

in decent condition but are showing some wear and were scheduled for replacement this fall.

Had to speed up that time frame, so the order went in and I should be back on the water by the weekend.

In the mean time might as well re-pack the bearing & inspect those hubs . . .

I have mine rotated and inspected every summer.  If needed any or all are replaced.  Every fall I take the boat in for an oil change, etc.  They give the boat and trailer a 34 point inspection.  So far so good.

That is a situation I prefer to avoid too. Luckily when I had a flat on my trailer tires last season because the valves went bad, it happened in my own garage. My point is that you have to be prepared to fix that wherever it happens.

What tires are you getting? I had GY Marathons on the Shoreland'r and replaced them with GY Endurance. I felt the Endurance were far superior to the Marathons. Might have been as simple as the increased load rating. I saw zero sidewall bulge with the Endurance while rolling down the highway. Was very happy with their performance.

Carlisle Radial Trail HD Trailer Tires ~

This one is rated for 2150 lbs and with a single axel trailer I like that load rating.

I'm not unhappy with them at all -

as long as I keep the wheels out of the woods .

Oh...just noticed this...OUCH!

Sorry to see that bud. Glad you were able to get the spare on without incident. I had to pull over on the Maine Turnpike last Saturday and had the old ticker racing a bit. Maine Turnpike is a 70 mph min and 80 mph is the norm. I walked back to the truck and having an F250 go by you within a few feet certainly caught my attention.

Hope you get that fixed in time...good luck.

I always had Goodyear Marathon trailers tires on my rigs and change them every 10 years. The last set were Goodyear Endurance trailers the superseded Marathon.

Sold my boat last Nov with new tires!

Tom

PS, Goodyear has a good warranty and tire pressure chart based on weight vs max speed.

Wow I’ve never gotten more than 4 years out of a set.  You must have a lot straighter, smoother and flatter roads than we have.

Never got less then 10 years out of a set, time runs out not tire wear. The last 3 years before selling my boat I didn’t fish after putting new tires on the trailer.

Going fishing tomorrow with the guy who bought my boat.

This are the same tires I have on my trailer and I've been very happy with them. Price isn't terrible either.

I’ll pull over well into the ditch just to avoid such haha. Although it sounds like the ditch is where A jay picked up the problem. Still yet a better problem than being flattened . I blew one on I-40 one time and drove about a mile on a metal wheel to get to an exit ramp and change it safely

Putting a cap on this one - My rig is once again Bravo Zero - Fully Operational.

My PSA for today ~

Having a few extra trailer wheel lug nuts of the proper size on hand,

can be very beneficial

That is all.

Rig is Bravo - Zero

Fish Hard

A-Jay, I’m nearing same boat coming up on 5 years with the PVB and planning new tread after this season. Couple questions - what jack do you have/recommend for your trailer? And did you buy a new 3rd tire as a spare? Thx much, -Fry

Yes I did get a spare as well

In the garage I'm using a Craftsman 3 ton floor jack ~

Rig is Bravo - Zero

As for the drive on road side jack . . .

I used this one road side but it was Really sketchy and I would NOT recommend it.

Went in the trash when I got home.

This is where I'm at now.

Seriously BETTER.

Thank you, exactly the endorsement I was looking for.  I almost picked up a similar jack to the Springfield and glad I didn't yet...

Had the left tire on the boat trailer blow out on I-20 last year.nerve racking experience on the side of expressway.if you’re ever broken down on a Georgia interstate call 511 a free emergency roadside service.they are equipped with air compressor, big flashing warning sign on the roof of their rig.they will change the tire for you if you haven’t already done so.i was in the middle of changing my tire and I guess another motorist alerted them and they came to my rescue.halleluha it was 95 degrees

I wouldn't ever recommend jacking up the trailer by the axle for rear of bending it like shown in the video of A-Jays link. I've always used a small bottle jack on the frame. Keep a small board or 2 with you as well in case you're on soft or uneven ground.

This is a timely thread.

I just purchased a 13 Lund Rebel and the tires look GREAT, but are expired.

......and also need a spare.

Thanks for the reminder ?
