MacOSU496 Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 4 lb Trilene XL (mono) or 4 lb Yo Zuri Hybrid? I have a 5’6” light rod with a small spinning reel. I will fish for stocked trout in lakes and may fish in small creeks for bass with this setup as well. I am leaning Yo Zuri Hybrid, but I have heard the memory is bad for spinning reels or is it not that bad? thanks! Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted April 20, 2021 Super User Posted April 20, 2021 Two things about 4#YZH 1: Minus point - It's diameter is about the same as 6# XL 2: Plus point - It's tested breaking strength is just over 8# YZH overall is a good line for it's price-point - I use 12# on my crankbait rig. It does have memory issues, but if you use KVD L&L those can be mostly moderated. Quote
garroyo130 Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 I'd go YZH and if using bait run a 2lb or 4lb mono leader. Quote
Super User ATA Posted April 20, 2021 Super User Posted April 20, 2021 ++your post is in wrong category, it need to be in other spiecies++ ok I am in trout fishing a lot and it is my second favorite fishing after bass fishing. If you really want the best, go to Varivas brand, They start to sell in USA snd you no longer need to buy it from Japan. in my bait casting set ups I am using Varivas 9lb strait to the lure and I can tell you it is the best. Also I use 4.2lb Flouro which is perfect. If you are using spinning set up, and want to use trout magnet 1/64oz, I suggest you do 2lb test S.O.S with 2lb test S.O.S leader(flouro). Quote

garroyo130 Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 If im fishing stocked trout im usually fishing a powerbait rig with tiny hooks on 2lb. 2lb gets more bites and if i snag i only lose a hook. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 Use 2# test, going from 4# to 2# makes a big difference. Have two identical setups except the line - the 2# line will get bit more. If you set your drag correctly you'll have more than enough stretch on the line to land anything. 1 Quote
redmeansdistortion Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 I'm a big fan of Maxima Ultragreen, the 5lb would work very well for your purposes. It's the same diameter as most competing 4lb mono. I've been using it for many years for trout and salmon and it always performs great. It's a little expensive for mono, but it's well worth it. I've tried other lines over the years, such as Yo Zuri, Trilene, and Sufix, but I keep going back to the Maxima. 1 Quote
Hulkster Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 i use 4 pound test Sufix Siege with no issues. its strong as hell and casts well. Quote

Those line have never cost me any fish. Two ultra light setups are setting in my truck right now waiting for after work. Good luck with the trout. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 20, 2021 Super User Posted April 20, 2021 4# test Yo-Zuri Hybrid is .235mm/.009D = to most 6# test mono /FC line. Unlike bass trout have microscopic vision and line wary fish, line diameter is important. Tying direct to lures you can get away with .009D line if if doesn’t interfere with the lure action. Using bait dropping down to 2#/.005D or 3#/ .006D works better for trout. Most trout anglers use leaders when bait fishing. Tom 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted April 20, 2021 Super User Posted April 20, 2021 My trout setups are medium light action rods with size 100 or 200 reels. 6# Vicious ultimate mono on the 100 size reel 8# on the 200. Vicious line diameter is smaller than average, the 6# is the size of most brands 4# mono and the 8# is the size of 6# Of course this year I threw the rule book out the window. I was testing out a new baitcaster combo I bought this year at my trout spot. 10# Berkley Big Game line with a Kastmaster spoon tied on. Cast like a bullet to spots I can’t reach with the lighter gear. I have caught multiple Brook Trout on this setup. My mind has been blown. 2 Quote
mrpao Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 I use Trilene XL #4 and SOS #4. Both are about the same. Haven't noticed much difference in the two lines. Mono will be easier to manage than any fluro. Plus much cheaper on the wallet. Quote
TheBasslayer Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 I actually use 10 pound power pro braid with a 6 pound seaguar red label, but that is because my Brown Trout creek is full of snags and I use spinners. But I have tried some Trilene, and it seems pretty good to me. I have no experience with Yo-Zuri hybrid. Quote

I do the same with a 1/4 oz Kastmaster on a ML baitcaster with 8 lb flouro. It's so much fun. 1 Quote
