Lumping all bass together; Smallmouth, Largemouth, Florida strain LMB, Spotted Bass etc into “bass” can create misconceptions regarding spawn behavior. In reality all 3 species behave and locate very differently during the spawning creates some myths.

Spawning bass to me are laying eggs and can’t be caught while doing it. You see them flashing and swimming together rolling in the nest and not interested in anything else.

When the female leaves she is gone off that bed only the male stays. These are the bed fish we try to catch with an occasional female that maybe nearby.

I agree bed fishing isn’t easy unless the anger is using live bait. I also agree it’s challenging and fun to try to catch bed fish using lures. However you are wasting valuable prey spawn time in shallow water in lieu of targeting pre spawners deeper.

Good video as usual!

Nice video Glen.  Personally I enjoy bed fishing for largemouth and don’t have an ethical problem with it if you release on the spot.  I typically use a t-rig white creature bait and have a 2 step stool on my front deck.  While I agree that taking the male off the bed usually decreases your odds, I will occasionally put an aggressive male in the box temporarily if the female is staying on or very near the bed and I think I can get her agitated.  I also agree that fan casting is not ideal though I will sometimes fan cast a large shallow flat as I’m searching, especially in lower visibility.  I find that while I may not catch a bedding fish, they will often show themselves and help me pinpoint where to focus.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys. I'm glad you liked it.

I totally enjoyed the video. It was very informative and certainly changed a couple of misconceptions I had about the spawn (duration, empty beds, color vs presentation).

Interestingly enough, I've watched a ton of your videos in the past, well before I joined this site.  You do an outstanding job of simplifying whatever topic you're working on.  Please keep it up.

Excellent video!

A lot of great information for especially anglers who have never or who are wanting to learn how to bed fish.

Every time this subject comes up, emotions get high.
I hope this helps folks who have a problem with it understand a bass’s behavior more.
It Has nothing to do with ethics.

Sometimes an anglers preconceived notions are the difference in being successful or not.

One of the best segment you had was talking about presentation and location.
So glad you did.
In my opinion those are the 2, above all others that will determine success or not.
We’ve talked many times about reading water and understanding how a fish relates to structure, the same nuances must be learned when bed fishing also.
Those only come with experience and understanding how and why it relates to a bass’s reaction to it.

Well Done
