I.rar Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 i seen people mention that they have put two people and some gear on a 10ft jon without any problems. when going through the specs of tracker , lowe and g3 jons , the max recommended capacity is like 275 - 320. say both people weigh 175 a piece then gear , battery and a trolling motor would put you way over whats safe for that boat. at least on paper. do any of you guys do this on a regular or have done this before? if i do pull the trigger and get one over this winter , it would be off craigslist. what i was thinking of doing , was cutting the benches and replacing the foam with something better. ive seen it mentioned before , but cant remember the manufacturer/s. obviously a 12ft would be better , but i would need it to be as light as possible. Super User Grey Wolf Posted September 15, 2009 Super User Posted September 15, 2009 Anybody who says they have no problems with two people in a 10' jon boat are stretching the truth a little. JMHO Quote
I.rar Posted September 15, 2009 Author Posted September 15, 2009 thats what i was thinking , but ive heard it from more than just a few people. ive also seen some big boys riding in some small boats and moving along slowly. im sure they were pushing the 250-275 max weight by themselves. ive never asked them how they did it though ;D . Quote
boneil Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 been there before. I weigh 250 and my buddy weighs 300+. We've been in small john boats getting to the duck blind with us two, decoys and other gear in the boat. Needless to say we moved very slow, we were way over the capacity. Very dangerous and stupid and I wouldn't do it today. Get yourself a boat big enough to do what you need it to do. Quote
I.rar Posted September 15, 2009 Author Posted September 15, 2009 im about 150 and one of the people who would be going with me is around 225. plus battery and TM... Quote
Super User Shane J Posted September 15, 2009 Super User Posted September 15, 2009 I try my best to not have 2 people in my 10' jon. It sucks. The boat is perfect for me and my gear, but when I gotta bring someone who doesn't have a boat and we're going to a small pond where my Nitro can't go, those days are more stressful than relaxing. Quote
Super User bilgerat Posted September 15, 2009 Super User Posted September 15, 2009 We've done three adults plus gear in my 14' Alumnacraft jon. The boat itself was capable of carrying the weight plus it was a calm day. The act of fishing sucked that day for obvious reasons. I would never do it again but technically we did it. Two people on a 10' is probably doable as long as one guy always knows what the second guy is going to do. Ya gotta communicate. Quote

done Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Truthfully man, it sucks but really do not go that small if you will be going to guys. I had a moded 1436 Tracker topper w 8hp OB and I can tell ya when I had a 200+ lb person up front we went SLOW, still fish-able but slow. I would never go smaller than that with 2 folks. If you have your heart set on it, I would really go for the 14 ft at least. Is a 10' doable, i think so, but if you plan on having it long and using it a lot, go bigger. Quote

done Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Why no larger than 1232, just a transportation and/or storage issue? I did have have to get a trailer for my 1436. That was a tough buy but I could tow it with anything. Now I am trying as hard as I can to not turn into a boat snob. About a year and a half ago I would have taken an empty wine barrel to fish out of and been happy with it. My 1436 jon was awesome and I got a TON of great times out of it. Also, I would say, keep in mind I fish Wylie which is (for NC) a large lake and part of the reason I eventually traded it in for a Tracker PT 175. If I hit smaller lakes and farm ponds I never would have upsized and the smaller sized job would not bug me then. Quote

Super User Shane J Posted September 15, 2009 Super User Posted September 15, 2009 Well, I'm 200lbs, and my co-angler another 200lbs, plus trolling motor and group 27 battery, not to mention 2 tackle bags and around 6 rods. Like I said, only for small ponds, and only when I need to. I love it for just me, because it's easy to handle on my own and storage isn't bad. I just sit in the very rear seat to operate the TM, and my passenger sits on the far front seat, with the gear in between us, and the battery behind me. Like was mentioned, communication is a must, because I've never been so close to getting hooked, as I have been in the jon boat, not to mention, almost tipped the thing last week when my buddy stumbled over something and lost his balance. DawsonH Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 You seem to me to be more interested in people telling you its ok than you are people giving you good advice. Here are several reasons why it is a bad idea and you should look into other options: a. Over the weight limits b. The Difficulty of fishing that close to another angler c. Not to insult, but you seem inexperienced on water: bad combo with a small boat because small is not equal to easy in this case d. There are other options such as the portable boats listed on this website e. I have a 12X32 and thats not an easy one to deal with, two foot shorter would be worse I would really suggest you weigh other options. If you plan on putting this boat in the back of a truck or something you would be fine with a longer boat than a 10'. Give us some info on why you are set on that length. Quote
Folshen Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 I got my first boat this spring, a 1236 and couldn't be happier with it. Its always myself and daughter or wife. Got 3/8" floor with carpet, TM and battery along with all your "normal" tackle. Even got swivel seats on 9" pedestals and stability has never been an issue even with jet skis and speed boats in the vicinity. Just weeks after getting that boat I ran across a 1032 for $50 that I just couldn't turn down...only for resale / profitability reasons. Long story short, fixed some leaks, applied paint and then took it out for a "test flight". Rating tag I believe stated 375lbs as the max capacity. I figured myself and the wife combined had us just over 400lbs and we took nothing but the oars, seat cushions, a tackle box and two rods. Never went more than 100 yards from the boat launch and probably never into water more than about 4' deep. It was miserable to say the least. I've never felt more like a human bobber than I did for that hour or so we spent on the water and promptly sold the boat a few days later. Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 You want to get off shore and fish two people. You don't want to trailer a boat. You don't have a lot of room to store a boat. If I were you I'd be looking for a flatback canoe. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 17, 2009 Super User Posted September 17, 2009 Get two SOT fishing kayaks. Quote
ArcticCat500 Posted September 17, 2009 Posted September 17, 2009 I've a 1032 JB, small deck (removable) in the front, 2 seats on swivels, a Minn Kota Endura 55 TM, and big Sears Marine battery in the back. It is absolutly perfect WHEN IM ALONE. The little craft is waaaay overloaded with 2 grown men, and all thier gear, plus the seats, batt and TM. For your own safety and that of your fishing buddy....Dont Doit. Take the advice of those who own this little boat, its just not worth the risk. Quote
I.rar Posted September 18, 2009 Author Posted September 18, 2009 Get two SOT fishing kayaks. thats what it may come down to... Quote
k4phd Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 Something to think about. I bought a new Crestliner 1436 with live well from the dealer several years ago. We were talking about weight capacity and ratings. He said that with the flotation built into the boat the rating was for the weight it would support filled with water. My wife and I or a friend and I do just fine with the 1436, but you have to keep in mind what you are on and act accordingly. I can haul my 1436 in the back of my F150. Two people can handle it easy. Good luck with what ever you get, but just enjoy. Jim Quote
kikstand454 Posted September 20, 2009 Posted September 20, 2009 another vote for a flat back canoe/gheenoe. they are awesome. Quote
