Best tournament budget spinning reel?

Shimano Sedona has always been my bang for the buck spinning reel recommendation.

I don't think many know they are still in production.  On eBay they sell for used almost for what they are sold for brand new, and sometimes even more.  Guido Hibdon won a couple of tournaments with the 1300 way back.  It isn't a smooth reel compared to most of what we have now, but it is tough.  It uses a worm drive instead of an oscillating gear, has a multidisc drag, and has a shallow spool with a 5 degree taper to facilitate longer casts.  I also own a 700 size that I use for trout, bought it last year.  I have that one spooled with 5lb Ultragreen.

Yeah I've seen them before. I wonder why the spool style never caught on ... from my understanding it still outcasts many of the long cast spools today

If there is ever a chance you will use your reel in saltwater, go with the Diawa BG.  If you will only use it in fresh water, and don't like a heavy reel, than go with one of the other suggestions.  BG is bullet proof and will hold up well in salt water, but is not as light as most reels the same size.

Thank you for all the suggestions! Im trying to stay away from pfluguer in general ive had 3 presidents that all formed clicking and bad springs in the bail and the same with my supreme. I like the new shimanos they have come out with but its always so hard to tell what the difference is when you spend 30$ more for a better real. Also the diawas seem quiet nice and i might end up with one of those

Another vote for the Fuego LT.  I think Daiwa has great options in the $60-$100 range.

 

I’ve owned several Shimanos in that price range and I just didn’t like that they were so heavy.  Most Daiwas in that price range feel way lighter.
