Eddie101 Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 Not sure if this is the right place to ask. I was fishing all day in steady rain, and it turns out that my make shift rain gear didn't hold up so well. It's not a fun time to get sick these days either so I think it's time that I invest in something that'll keep me warm, dry, w/o breaking the bank. I found these two, and am wondering if there is something even better out there, and of course cheaper? https://aftco.com/products/solitude-fishing-jackets-waterproof#shopify-product-reviews https://aftco.com/products/reaper-windproof-fishing-jacket Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted April 14, 2021 Super User Posted April 14, 2021 Simms makes make decent gear ~ https://www.simmsfishing.com/prodry A-Jay 2 1 Quote
redmeansdistortion Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 Like was said above, Simms. It's expensive but well worth it. While you're at it, get yourself a bottle of Nik Wax to treat it, the raindrops will bead right up and off they go. I use it on my waders, parka, tent, and hammock. If you get Nik Wax, make sure you wear gloves when you apply it, because it can be challenging to remove from your skin. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted April 15, 2021 Super User Posted April 15, 2021 Big thing for me was finally getting bibs. With most any jacket and pants water will eventually get in. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 15, 2021 Super User Posted April 15, 2021 True fact - there are lots of good to excellent rain suits out there - pick the one that fits your budget. I bought a set of Cabelas Guide Wear in 2001 and it still works great. I don't use it all the time, but those times when you need to use it, it works great. On the pants versus bibs debate, I've found that the bibs keep me dryer - A LOT dryer. Quote

I’ve got some guide wear too, mine are 2005. It’s the only rain gear my folks use. In both uninsulated and insulated. I have heard good reviews about Blackfish. Quote
padon Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 bass pro 100 mph, cabelas guide wear, aftco hydronaut, .there are alot of good ones. the thing with raingear is when you buy a quality set your gonna hate to pay the price. but if you buy a good set it will keep you dry and last many years. Quote
E-rude dude Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 I’ve been using Bass Pro Bone dry for a few years with no complaints. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 16, 2021 Global Moderator Posted April 16, 2021 Bass Pro 100mph suit is probably the most overrated, overpriced suit out there IMO. I made the mistake of buying one, it fell apart after a couple years. They fought me on returning it, but eventually did. The new one has fallen apart again. Same thing as the last one, seams coming undone so now I get wet when it rains very much and the worse is the glue they use on the cuffs to attach the velcro comes off so now I can't seal either cuff and it just flops around while I'm trying to fish and I can't try to seal the rain out either. Really wish I could get my money back for it and buy a different one but thankfully found a Frabill F3 suit on clearance a few years ago so I have a suit I can wear if I need one when it's supposed to rain and not just be cold, but I lost a bunch of weight a couple years ago so now it looks like I'm wearing a tent. 2 Quote
Super User gim Posted April 16, 2021 Super User Posted April 16, 2021 That's too bad on the Bass Pro suit. I have seen them in the store at Cabela's and wondered what the quality was like. I've got the step down from that one, the Bass Pro Gore-Tex suit. I don't know if they even make it anymore to be honest. I've had it for at least 10 years now and it still keeps me dry. Its definitely more of a "thinner" suit than the one you speak of though but I need it for the middle of summer when its muggy and starts raining. Anything thicker and I just start sweating profusely. If I use it during the colder time period like spring or fall, I layer underneath. Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted April 16, 2021 Super User Posted April 16, 2021 If you want it to work and wear 30+ years, stick to Gore-Tex (and the brands that use it) My Marmot light shell and Hagloff's rain pants were both closeouts bought at sierratradingpost that many years ago. Quote
pdxfisher Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 In my kayak I wear a dry top when the water is cold. A key feature is that the wrists have a latex gasket. That is such a great feature because water can not run down my sleeve. I can submerse my arm and stay dry. I am not sure if I have seen any rain gear has those but I would buy it if I could. If you want rain gear for cooler weather then consider wearing a dry top and waders. I can jump in the water and stay dry. Thisis likely too hot for really warm and humid days. It works well out here in the Northwest. Quote
