livemusic Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 What is your favorite Senko color? I haven't fished much with Senko until this year and I guess I go with what Roland Martin says is their biggest seller, green pumpkin black flake #297. It's been working. But yesterday, I tried Red Shad Laminate color #900 and I caught one first cast and then caught some more, so, it works! But, they were biting yesterday! The water had some color to it, it was not super clear, which isn't that common here! I am betting simple black color would work fine. Lastly, do you favor the Yamasenko or a different brand? It would be great to find one less expensive. Or a source to buy Yamasenko in bulk! 1
Super User MN Fisher Posted April 14, 2021 Super User Posted April 14, 2021 I do color choice based on two things 1: Water clarity 2: Light levels Dingy water on a very cloudy day gets a dark color, clear water on a bright day gets a light color. BPS Stik-Os, Zoom Zlinkys and Yum Dingers all have their fans - but the preponderance of 'likes' still seems to be Yamamoto. 1
KCFinesse Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 Funny- #297 and #900 are my favorites and I find myself cycling between those two depending on water clarity...
Global Moderator Mike L Posted April 14, 2021 Global Moderator Posted April 14, 2021 When I feel the need to throw a stick bait, which most times is only as a follow up, I’ll use the Berkeley General before a Senko. That said when I used them the watermelon red was my biggest producer. No idea what the number is. Mike 1
Super User Spankey Posted April 14, 2021 Super User Posted April 14, 2021 It probably worth having black and a smoke color also. Consider even a white possibly. 1

I do prefer the BPS sticks and Yum dingers because of price. 1

Kenny Yi Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 I don't really use stick baits much, but when I do, it's usually a Strike King Shim-e stick or a Yamasenko. My local ponds can be pretty muddy so a black and blue tends to work. If I ever fish clearer water, that's when the green comes out.
AmmoGuy Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 I have an assortment of Senko colors, but 297 is far and away the biggest producer. I tried BPS sticks and Dingers for a while. They are cheaper and more durable, but toss them in some clear water and watch them sink compared to a senko. Just not the same. When the fish are fired up, sure they will catch them, but I don't feel like they solicit the all-conditions bite that Senkos seem to. 1
Super User BrianMDTX Posted April 14, 2021 Super User Posted April 14, 2021 #956. Watermelon with Copper Flake/Orange with Red Flake. Hand's down my top producer. 4

Primarily the scent, that stuff is strong. Also because I only use a stick bait as a follow up, it falls faster than a Senko which for that is what I want. For me there is a definite difference between the 2. Mike 2
Super User MIbassyaker Posted April 14, 2021 Super User Posted April 14, 2021 1. Green Pumpkin. 2. Green Pumpkin with Chartreuse tail. 3
Super User fishballer06 Posted April 14, 2021 Super User Posted April 14, 2021 It's hard to go wrong with our Lord and Savior, Green Pumpkin. Outside of that, I like: Black w/ blue fleck (dirty water) Watermelon (clear water) Gooseberry Laminate (it's a black/dark purple color) To spice it up, I carry the following: GP/Watermelon Lam Bama Bug Smoke w/ blue/gold fleck (bluegill color) and I'll dip the tail in Chartruese JJ's 3

Mike Mike, you say you only use it as follow up, does that mean you cast it after you have used another bait at that target? What do you normally fish with? I use soft plastics more than anything, for sure.

I use plastics of all shapes and sizes about 70% of the time I’m on the water. I used to use a Texas rigged stick bait as a stand alone also but not so much anymore. I just don’t feel I need too to get bit. But an unweighted stick bait is and has been my best option to get a riled up bass to circle back. Mike 1
OCdockskipper Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 Like the OP, I like the #900 Red shad laminate on darker, cloudy days. When rigged wacky, it resembles a fleeing crawdad. On brighter days, I like the #926 Green Pumpkin/amber laminate. Most critters in the water have a lighter underside, so this mimics that. I have tried Yum Dingers, Generals, BPS sticks and others and find they fall short of Senkos. I wish they didn't, they are less expensive & some are more durable, but the Senkos outproduce them, especially on those days when the fish are being a bit finicky.
