From a January 6th post I made about sunscreens:

Each July I visit my dermatologist, Dr. Julie Tran, and strip down to nothing for my annual skin cancer check.

She checks everything!!!!

Had three small basal cell carcinoma removed from my left arm this past July and I never noticed them. They had just started to form and she spotted them. Froze them off and they are gone.

Dr. Tran has frozen off a number of these basal cells from my ears, forehead, and scalp over the past five years. I had no idea they were there.

I dress to fish like it is January weather all year, be it in the Ranger or pond fishing, with long sleeve shirts, long pants, a baseball cap, and sun glasses.

Dr. Tran continues to be on my case to use sun screen that contains zinc oxide and I will admit that I am lax about replacing the first covering as the day goes on. Here is a link to zinc oxide sunscreens:

https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/beauty/anti-aging/g26541068/best-zinc-oxide-sunscreen/

Guys and gals, no one can make you cover up when you go fishing or make you wear sunscreen. It is your choice.

What is upsetting is that skin cancer is a silent killer, and your family doctor may not notice any basal cells like a true dermatologist is trained to do.

So please see a dermatologist, take off your clothes, and get checked. It will save your life.

NOTE: I find good sunscreens at Walmart.

Sam is 100% correct. I lost a very good friend @43 yrs old to skin cancer. I’ve had numerous moles taken off me but have been lucky so far. I have lots of moles so my dermatologist has me on a 6 month plan for checkups. I don’t mind - she’s hot!
Wearing long pants, long sleeve shirts, gloves and a wide brim hat is miserable on hot days but it’s worth it in the long run.

My visits are usually around September with my Doc Heidi Cole.

Last visit she found one - halfway down my back, a few inches right of my spine - an froze it off. It's a little uncomfortable for a few days, but I'd rather that than what could result if it was left on.

This is what I do - light colored cargo-pants help with the heat, and the Columbia and HUK long-sleeved T's I have are SPF 30 rated and thin enough to be cool...add the hat and I'm good to go.

i enjoy sweating in the hot sun, makes me drink tons of water and keeps the weight off.

I am always wearing long pants, waders, long sleeves, gloves, shoes, apply sunscreen every 2 hrs to my face, wear a gator around my neck and a wide brimmed straw cowboy hat complete with sunglasses.

I used to fish facing into the sun in some areas but now i dont fish into the sun anymore as it was so hot with sun reflecting off the water that i couldnt keep my sweat from forming under the sunglasses that then ran into my eyes.

Perhaps some useful info.

I was curious when MN Fisher mentioned the rating on his long sleeve tee's.

I like the NRS silk weights. I have a lot of technical sun wear but these are the most comfortable. It really feels like you have nothing on. UPF50 rating.

I never wear shorts.  Quick dry fishing pants, long sleeve hooded fishing shirt, hat, plenty of sunscreen.  I'm partial to Columbia and Huk pants and shirts, but there are lots of good ones out there.  I buy most from Amazon.

I grew up next to a public swimming pool...went every day...and never wore sunscreen.

I'm 53 and doc found Squamous cell carcinoma on my head...they took it off about three weeks ago...still healing up the dime sized crater in my dome : )

I've been doing sunscreen / hats / long sleeve shirts for quite a while now. And I am super vigilant with ear and eye protection.

Appreciate advice on pants and shirts.  Good stuff!!

Quick dry pants I feel keep me cooler in the heat because the material doesn't get too hot and it keeps the direct sun off of my legs.  For shirts I like any kind of polyester quick-dry gym/running shirt in a lighter color.

If you're just looking for sun protection and not too picky about name brands or looking stylish, Sierra.com almost always has something on sale/clearance.
