00bullitt Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 Gary Yamamoto makes phenomenal plastic baits. One of them being his Double Tail Hula Grub. Adding that to a finesse jig head is a lethal combo that flat out catches fish everywhere I go. I have used various jig heads over time, but find the Spotsticker Crawler Heads to be a perfect fit for the 5" version. I have removed skirts from several other jigs over the years to use the head. I have never used the 4" D/T Hula, but see that it has its place for an even more finesse application. I'd urge you to give it a try. Its also not as hard to detect the bite with. The colors shown below are the only colors I have ever used; both are green pumpkin....one with red flake and the other with purple and copper. Most often the choice is made as to what is available. 5 Quote

I sometimes think the Rage flanges displace too much water. I would certainly give it a shotvif they did. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted April 12, 2021 Super User Posted April 12, 2021 What size hook is on those jigs? im using the Keitech version 2 football jigs for my finesse rig. Love to find another option. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 12, 2021 Super User Posted April 12, 2021 Yamamoto weedless football jig or his Hula grub jig both work great with a Hula grubs. Gary uses Gamakatsu, Owner hooks and less expensive Mustad. Hook size is according to jig weight. 4” Hula grub fits both 1/4 & 3/8 oz, 5” fits all sizes. I prefer the 4” on 3/8 oz weedless football heads. The Hula grub is a “spider jig” used on a plain painted jig head. Tom 1 Quote

I mostly throw it in 3/8oz, but will go down to 1/4 on occasion. I've tried the GYBC heads, but they just werent for me. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 13, 2021 Global Moderator Posted April 13, 2021 I made my own standup football heads with a 3/0 hook, wire keepers, and used a neck down pin for the weed guard so it's only about 5 fibers instead of a whole weedguard. Works great, way better than the Chompers head and easy to do. Quote
Super User Spankey Posted April 13, 2021 Super User Posted April 13, 2021 Nice looking combinations. I generally fish on the lighter side. I’ve come to like the Missile Finesse Jigs. Quote

Love to find another option. Picasso makes a great finesse FB jig, the Aaron Martens Tungsten FB jig. The profile is just a little bigger then the Ktech but it has stout wire 3/0 hook, weights range 1/4-3/4. They have a ball head design too which is called Little Spotty, same size same hook just a ball head. The colors are great too, Molting Craw has done really well for me. Quote

JohnnyF Posted April 13, 2021 Posted April 13, 2021 I've been using the d&l baby advantage jig and the dirty jigs luke clausen compact jig for spotted bass. Been impressed with them both so far Quote
Kenny Yi Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 The hook definitely isn't finesse but I like to use the Buckeye Ballin Out jig by GMAN, which has the trimmed skirt. Pair it with a Rage Bug for slower fall and flat body for skipping. It skips great, which I would expect if GMAN is in the name. Quote
Big Swimbait Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 (edited) They are getting hard to find but the Cabin Creek Spider Parts on a Gammy 1/8 oz ball-head jig is a year round producer for me. I like the idea that I can mix/match the skirts. Plus one tentacle is thicker to rig the jig weedless. Edited April 15, 2021 by Big Swimbait sp Quote
