lunkerboss923 Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 I'll preface by saying I have been a Shimano loyalist for a good while. Owned my first Greenie back in '93. I've been trying new things lately and just got off the boat from a two day trip on Lake Conroe. I went to Academy and bought the Tatula SV TW 103 after a discussion with my friend who owned one. Flipping and pitching with my 734C was awesome. Saw some spawning beds and hit those all day. I had so much fun, I forgot I had a Curado K, a Scorpion MGL, and Chronarch on board. I really don't have anything to say about the Scorpion, other than it's an overhyped JDM Curado that is a God awful maroon color. In fact, I'd love to get rid of it. I don't know what it was about the SV, I was pitching jigs so effortlessly it felt so smooth, furthermore I caught a bass using a jig for the first time, I mostly use creature baits and heavy weight and Flipping hook. I have never done it before and when you get hooked up on a jig it feels like an accomplishment! Give me an SV all day long. Shimano, you can have your reels back. Maybe I'm saying this because I just caught a dozen or so bass on jigs throwing something other than Shimano. I'm sure the honeymoon phase will be over soon enough, but seriously I could sell off all my Shimano reels and go exclusively Daiwa in a heartbeat. The SVs are that good!!! Quote
Cigarguy Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 I'm a fan of Daiwa and Shimano fishing tackle. No need to limit oneself to one or the other or for these 2 brands only. There are lots of good tackle out there. I don't get the 1 vs the other mentality. Everyone makes good and bad products. Find what works for you at a price you can afford, use it and enjoy it. Once I've bought an item I owe nothing more to brand x. 4 Quote
lunkerboss923 Posted April 12, 2021 Author Posted April 12, 2021 I could never part ways with my Curado K or Chronarch MGL. Two very irreplaceable items that I hold very dearly. The SV just moves the excitement scale. It's kind of like being a Ping enthusiast and you discover Titleist...you play your best round with your set of Titleist clubs. Now you want to tell the world about how great Titleist is and how you can't believe you still have that crappy Ping G30 driver which is so yesterday's technology. That said, I really do hate my Scorpion. 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 12, 2021 Super User Posted April 12, 2021 I will give you $100 for that piece of junk Scorpion. I have seen many guys sell their putter or driver right there on the course. Not because the equipment is inferior, but because they just suck and want to blame something. 2 3 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted April 12, 2021 Super User Posted April 12, 2021 And I’m still using crappy Ping G30. No need to say your ex-wife was miserable once you married new wife. IMHO 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 12, 2021 Global Moderator Posted April 12, 2021 I was a Shimano guy until I tried my first SV Daiwa. Now I own 2 Shimanos, both swimbait reels and at least one of those is in danger when my 300 Tatula gets here. Quote
Lead Head Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 Nothing wrong with the other guys, but there is something about those SV spools that just makes casting (or Flipping) more enjoyable. Sure, they aren't typically the best raw distance reels, but I'm very rarely concerned about max distance. I'll take those effortless, controlled casts all day... even into the wind. Quote
Deplorable Fisherman Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 I try not to be "that guy" who is one sided like Ford vs. Chevy, but I've had my reasons for being a Daiwa guy. When I was moving away from Abu after a few disappointments several years ago, I was giving both Daiwa and Shimano a go. Had picked up a Shimano and honestly don't remember which model but the first trip using it there was a horrible grinding when reeling and it would actually feel like it wanted to lock up. I immediately returned it and decided since the Daiwa's I had purchased ran like a Swiss watch, I would stick with them. Two years ago I picked up a Curado DC and again, first trip out I had problems. The thumb release simply wouldn't engage until I turned the handle a time or two. I had thought to just get it replaced but to be honest, and it might be minor, I just did not like that whining noise the DC brake system produced. For me, I'll only buy Daiwa reels from now on. Call it bad luck, but that's just the way I roll. I will also never buy a Lew's again. It was probably 15+ years ago but I had bought a Lew's spinning reel and about the second trip out the bail literally blew apart. I had gone back to the store and they said they were unable to honor any warranty and that I had to ship it to China for repair or replacement and I would be lucky to see it in 3-4 months if at all. I'm sure things have improved since then, but that just left a bad taste in my mouth with that brand enough to never buy another. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted April 12, 2021 Super User Posted April 12, 2021 Like my Shimanos. Especially the 201E7 and Chronarch 100B, but own about 5 times more Daiwas than Shimanos. Lots of aftermarket parts for the Daiwas. Won't be getting rid of either. 2 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted April 12, 2021 Super User Posted April 12, 2021 I love the Tatula SV, especially for light baits, pitching, skipping and target casting. I'm pretty much a Daiwa guy, but that said Shimano and Daiwa are basically the best reel manufacturers out there (and they make pretty nice rods too). I just got my oldest son a SLX MGL 70 and took it out on Saturday and it casts a weightless senko beautifully into wind as well, maybe even better than my Tatula SV I was using. 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted April 12, 2021 Super User Posted April 12, 2021 It reely IS a Ford v Chevy thing. Both make good products, and both have or have had lemons. SV is great for what it does well, but line capacity and size make it a less than ideal choice for more robust presentations. Quote

The candy raspberry color throws everything off. It's just not a good looking reel. It functions fine, just not for me. Make me an offer. Quote

The Shimano is definitely better at throwing lighter baits than the Daiwas, so it sits on my jerkbait rod. 1 Quote
