Super User Bird Posted April 11, 2021 Super User Posted April 11, 2021 Been doing quite well on top water once the water temps hit 50. This pic proves how fearless Bass are. 4 1 Quote
MGF Posted April 11, 2021 Posted April 11, 2021 High winds or rain whenever I'm not at work. I just went out ti hitch the boat and it started raining on me as soon as I stepped out the door. LOL 55 F with a light rain... a more dedicated person would fish but 55 F and wet isn't for me anymore. In other words I'm still close to zero for the year. 1 Quote

Many times I've hooked up the boat at the house in heavy rains to drive to the lake a half hour away to zero rain. Quote

Like I said somebody a little more ambitious could have fished. 50 minutes ago, TnRiver46 said: My WP 130 is still a zero fish bait I've only been fishing a WP for a few years. Two years ago I did real well on a 90 in the river. Last year I don't think I ever caught a fish on it. I have a new 75 that hasn't even gotten wet yet. 1 Quote

Biglittle8 Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 I've caught a few on it... Only 1 with size. The "Whopper" must hypnotize little fish. ? What the fish sees ? what the fish gets ? 1 1 Quote
Dangerfield Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 The WP is a fish producer, but I find the 90 to be the best of the bunch in Bone. Smallies, Largies and big ol pike hate that little plopper with a passion. 130 has not been good to me either, I do have a 75 for the kayak but the 90 outproduces it also. 1 Quote

Frankly I think the 130 is over kill for bass here too. Its more like a small muskie lure. I'll sell you mine and then you can have two that don't catch any fish. 1 3 Quote

I'll agree with that and up it one - my single 110 gets nada, my 90s get chased and I've caught pike and bass on them. Course my range is limited in the canoe, so maybe I'm just not getting to where the bigger fish are. Quote

The whopper plopper as a lure itself has simply not been effective for me. I bought 3 of them (180, 130, 110) when they first came out and they were all the hype. DSG was having a buy two, get one free sale so I got sucked in. Plus Chris Lane had just won a tournament using one on the Elites. I will say they are a well-made, quality lure though. I will also admit that topwater lures overall in general have not been effective for me either, for at least the last 3 seasons. A fish here, a fish there, but rarely a pattern or consistent bite with any kind of topwater. Which kinda sucks, because I really like catching fish on topwater lures too. Its an explosive, exciting way to fish. I give it a try every time too, for at least a while. 1 Quote

NavyVet1204 Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 I’m glad to see someone is catching fish on those ploppers. I’ve got three of them in my tackle box and have only caught two fish in a year on them. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted April 30, 2021 Author Super User Posted April 30, 2021 That's strange that some baits are very effective for some anglers and not others. I have a WP ready in the boat about every trip. Spinnerbaits is an all-time favorite bait of mine yet I've never had a single bite or even a chase on chatterbait. The next fish I catch I'm gonna hook it's mouth with a chatterbait and take a pic and see if that triggers some kind of phenom. 1 Quote
HaydenS Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 I've had days where I've caught a fish every cast on a whopper plopper. My R2S plopper is missing a lot of paint. Quote
Biglittle8 Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 I just picked up a couple of Berkley 90 Choppo's, a couple bucks cheaper... I'll follow up with results after I try them. Quote
throttleplate Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 caught bass on 130 plopper and pike but way more hits and misses on it. I have 3 130 el choppos and would like to trade 1 for a smaller one. I do very well on topwater spooks, chug bug, and other popper baits. Quote
Dangerfield Posted April 30, 2021 Posted April 30, 2021 also if I can add, the River2Sea version has been good to me. The BPS version is garbage and way too heavy for its size. To get the plop going right after the drop takes 2 full rotations to surface. 75 size is 3/4oz.. wth? The Choppo is close, I've caught a couple, but does not draw out fish like the real thing. Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted April 30, 2021 Super User Posted April 30, 2021 5.6 lb on April 23rd 2021 Whopper Plopper 130 Bone in 14 FOW. 3 Quote
TheBasslayer Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 I haven't caught anything on topwater, probably since I'm a bank fisherman, but also because I don't try it too much. I need to buy a different color, because I snagged it and got it back about 3 months later all dirty and rusty. It was underwater for the whole time. Quote
Bubba 460 Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 And with that photo I say again, just imagine what a 10 lb + would eat. I swear you could fish for bass with nothing but musky lures and catch them. maybe not many but they would be nice. 17 hours ago, Biglittle8 said: I just picked up a couple of Berkley 90 Choppo's, a couple bucks cheaper... Oh they sounded nice at first but I've bought my last Choppo, It's River2Sea for me. Never had a problem out of them (River2Sea) and I have a dozen. 3 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 1, 2021 Super User Posted May 1, 2021 I have a 90 and 130. They both work. The 90 culls fewer smaller fish, but I've caught one over 6 lbs. on it. But I usually go for the 130 because it doesn't tend to spin after a really long cast. Since I kayak fish my line angle is lower than it would be from a boat deck. The 90 spins upon retrieve until I get it closer. Line twist is undesirable. And one of the best things about these lures is you can bomb them a mile and cover lots of water. Quote
Biglittle8 Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 So on the Choppo's caught 1 fish on the first cast and another a few casts more. Don't know how they will hold up to regular use... I'll let ya know. 1 Quote
