My shimano slx xt reel's cast control knob keeps tightening while I'm casting . I set it to minimize side to side play in the spool and it will get progressively tighter as I'm casting the lures. Does anyone know what may be causing this issue? I tried adding some reel grease under the knob cap because I thought the spool spinning was causing friction with the cap and tightening it, but this did not improve it. I don't have this issue with any of my other shimano or daiwa baitcasters. I have no problems fully disassembling my reels and servicing them, but I'm kind of stumped on this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What I have heard most is loosened up not tighten. Does the cast control cap easy to turn both way? May be new washer would do the trick.

I have a similar problem with one of my Purple Alphas reels except the drag star loosens to the point I get a nice backlash if I don't catch it in time.  Not to highjack your thread, but if anyone has an idea why it is happening, I am would be glad to hear it.

Cast control or drag star???

Sorry.  Drag star.  Didn't realize I forgot to put that part in.  I've got 3 of these reels.  Only does it on this one.  Never had a problem with any of my other brands either.

Drag has nothing to do with backlashes.

I just pulled up the schematics ... the design is interesting. Typically reels have a spring under the drag star to keep tension on it so that it doesn't easily change settings, this reel doesn't have that.

All I know is that ever time I got a backlash on this reel, the drag star was backed all the way off leaving no tension on the spool allowing it to spin free.  Seems to me that would affect backlashes.  I also keep cast control tension loose like on all my Daiwas.

How do you spool line on your reel without any drag?  I couldn't on a used Airy Red Pixy.  Had to send reel out for repair.  It had a couple missing washers.

EDIT:  Thanks garr.  Think I have at least one box for them.  Hopefully at least one set of schematics.....but I don't like tinkering.  About all I'll do is change out spools.   :D

I don’t have this problem with all my old Daiwa reels, 2 pixy. Alphas purple and TD Sol. I can see the problem can happen if you don’t set drag star tight enough, it become too easy to spin backward.

If you have this problem a lot, the easy fix would be convert to clicking drag star, at least it would have enough tension to hold drag star in place.

Thanks.  Need to look at the schematics.  Maybe there is a nut on it that needs to be tightened so it won't turn so easily.  Or an o-ring or something to keep it in position.

If cap is loose plumbers Teflon tape around the threads might help hold it in place

Drag star has nothing to do with spool tension.  Cast control knob does that.

I no longer remember, but maybe both were loose when it happened.  I realize the cast control puts pressure on the spool.  I also realize the drag controls how much pressure it takes to pull line off the spool.  I locked the drag down as far as I dared on the Airy Red and was still unable to spool line on the reel.  Spool wouldn't turn with the handle.

The drag star thing sounds like it's not getting tension from the washers, clicker or spring as the case might be. I've got an old Trion, that I put the washers on facing wrong, and it does that, but I fish it fairly tight, so I haven't gotten to do it.

As far as the tension knob,  while not impossible, it's highly unlikely that it is tightening from casting. It is probably feeling tighter from fluid lock, and adding grease probably made the problem worse. Clean everything out, make sure all parts are present and assembled properly per schematic. If the threads are indeed sloppy enough to back out, add a little blue loctite to the knob, and let it dry completely before assembling.

If you add loctite how are you going to adjust it ?

Use Blue, not Red - it's still adjustable. Red is when you want to lock it down semi-permanently. Blue just holds it from vibration or accidental loosening.

I'd still go with the Teflon Tape though.

OP is this a left hand reel?  Are you using the same grip to cast as you do retrieving?  Just trying to rule out casting while paming the reel and bumping the CC knob.

No it's a right hand retrieve. I cast with my right and retrieve with my right, I pitch with my left though. I also thought this could be the issue, but it does not happen with any other reel.

I guess I can try to replace the two washers in the cap and the o ring. Plumbers tape could work, but I would prefer to have it work with stock parts. I have ten reels so I don't really need this to work, but not being able to fix something bugs me to no end. I also really like this reel even compared to my 20 metanium. Thanks to for all the suggestions.

Don't know about that. Blue holds bolts pretty tight. It probably is missing an o ring. Besides the fact when you turn the knob dried particles of loctite will flake off the threads eventually and go in your reel.

You are thinking of loctite red, blue is breakable when applied to clean dry threads, and threaded while wet. If you let it dry on one surface and lube the other it will just make the threading snug.

Good question though. Now 5200 is permanent.

You sound like my customers with The Campy Record equipped Pinarellos, "Sure I've been to 5 shops before yours, and my bike finally works great now, but you did it wrong"  :)
