M-Gunner Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Does anyone have a Tohatsu Outboard. Was wondering if they are a good motor. Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted September 11, 2009 Super User Posted September 11, 2009 I have a new 9.8hp 4 stroke with about 10 hours on it. I bought it as a kicker motor for my 18' aluminum boat to fish the 10hp limit lakes here in So. Illinois. So far it has performed flawlessly. I talked to many dealers and small outboard owners before I decided to buy Tohatsu. I had some say they were made cheaper than Merc or Honda, but everyone who actually owned one had nothing but good to say about them. It was @ 500.00-700.00$ less than the rest. Time will tell if it was the right choice. For the money I think they are a good value. I really liked the local dealer. That was a big part of the decision. Good luck. Quote
M-Gunner Posted September 11, 2009 Author Posted September 11, 2009 Thanks..I heard they were a good motor. A big plus for me there is a dealer close by. Quote
HPBB Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I don't have one, but would like to get one. I know many many people that have the 18hp 2 stroke and 30hp 2 stroke and they just love them. they are very great running motors, also run very strong. lots of them in my neck of the woods any I know nobody that have anything bad to say about them. dave Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I have a 40HP. Motor is bullet proof. I did some research and they are used on commercial boats a lot. Someone said they are the Japanese Mercury. They actually are a Nissan I believe. The Mercury reference is comparing how common they are in Japan. I have been running it for 4 years. It is 13 years old. Still running strong. Quote
CFFF 1.5 Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 I have a 2004 30hp Tohatsu 4-Stroke and I love my motor. Tohatsu makes Nissan and Tohatsu also makes I believe the lower HP Mercury motors. I think 30hp and under. A mercury dealer told me this. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted September 11, 2009 Super User Posted September 11, 2009 About the only complaint I've ever heard about the Tohatsu is they are very proud of their parts. Most seem to agree they are good motors but ***** everytime the they have to buy a part or have them worked on. Quote
Super User Micro Posted September 12, 2009 Super User Posted September 12, 2009 I have a 2004 30hp Tohatsu 4-Stroke and I love my motor. Tohatsu makes Nissan and Tohatsu also makes I believe the lower HP Mercury motors. I think 30hp and under. A mercury dealer told me this. Tohatsu makes new Merc engines from 9.9 down. Over 9.9 up to, I think, 40, are made by Yamaha. Over that and they are made by Merc. This according to a Merc service rep I talked to. Quote

Either way all these Merc Lovers drive me insane becuase they aren't even buying Mercury. Quote
M-Gunner Posted September 12, 2009 Author Posted September 12, 2009 I'm looking for a new and it was between a Tohatsu and a Mercury. The difference in price is only $300.00. The Tohatsu being the cheaper in price. Quote
