I bought a brand new 8.1 fuego ct. This specific reel makes a bit of unpleasant grinding noise during slow retrieve. Other than that, it’s a good reel like all other Daiwas. I exchanged for another one, but it makes the same noise. I have a 6.3 fuego ct as well, and it doesn’t have that noise, (Gear noise, yes). I can’t pin point where the noise comes from. I am willing to try anything. Please let me know if have a possible solution. Thanks!

P.S I don’t want to return it because I can’t find a better reel for that price.

My Fuego-CT 8.1 makes it too...I did tear-down and inspection, nothing out of whack that I could find, new grease/oil...and it still does it. Doesn't seem to affect the performance, so I just ignore it.

Add some spool tension or ride your thumb on the spool, then crank it and the sound will stop. It'll also stop under load while reeling in a bait with some resistance or fighting a fish. Not to worry.

Sounds like maybe there's some play in the anti-reverse bearing. I would take the handle, drag dial off and pull the cylinder to expose the anti-reverse bearing and pack it with grease and then re-assemble and see if it's still there.

Some magnetic brake reels will do that sometimes. I have a couple of Daiwa made Cabela's reels that sound like the motorcycle in Bat out of Hell sometimes. A 7.1 Fuego does it intermittently too. Spool side play and moving parts in the brake seem to be the culprits, but I haven't found the specific actual cause. Doesn't seem to affect performance.

That's a no-no. The racket when unloaded is a common Daiwa thing, like the others said. Both of mine do it including the one in my hand, but it stops under simulated load. It's been jacking frogs through pad fields for 3 years and the ARB is still righteous.

I have the 8.1 and 6.3. The 8.1 sounds the same as yours. Neither are the quietest reels out there for sure. Haven't had them long but they both work great and cast a mile.

LOL. A no-no? And why is that? I've serviced all my reels and the anti-reverse bearing should be packed with grease. None of my Daiwa have had such a racket and I own and have owned dozens of them.

Adding spool tension helps with the noise lol but if I did that, the spool would be tight, and I can’t cast far. Anyway it’s a solution to the noise thanks!

The 7.1 does it too? ??‍♂️ I was about to exchange to the 7.1

Never put grease on an AR clutch. The Fuego is a workhorse reel and isn’t going to be whisper quiet or silent

I know the fuego isn’t quiet at all, but the noise really bothers me. Hopefully it’s gone under load like @PhishLI said.

Faster ratios have more and smaller teeth on the pinion.  Some noise like that is going to be common on lower price point fast ratio reels with plastic side plates.

This is very interesting. I kinda figured it has to do with the gear ratio because the 6.3 doesn’t have the noise. Can I say that higher speed reels are less durable because the teeth are smaller (I assume thinner)?

That suggestion was simply made for simulating a load, silly boy.

I would return/exchange it for one that sounds better or fish it.

I bought this to replace my slx as a frog and punching reel. I was thinking about exchanging it for a 7.1 speed, but @Basswhole mentioned that the 7.1 does make the same noise intermittently, so for $65 I guess I have to put up with it?

That's just it, man - this is the second one, he did exchange one and the second does it as well.

Why...they come with grease. And I've added grease to AR bearings when cleaning reels. Please explain. I've had zero issues and end up with smooth running reels.

Stick your CT spool in and go the the lake and chuck and wind a spinner bait. You shouldn't hear it. If you do and it makes you batty then exchange it.  It's likely you won't hear the play you're hearing while twirling it around in hand without a load.

Pflueger - all four of mine are quiet... :tongue-047:

I think the issue is with the casting of the inner part the spool lip rides on or the spool lip itself. I had the same issues with a Fuego and exchanged twice with no change. I decided to swap spools with another Fuego and ended up with two quiet reels.

Yeah ignore what I said. LOL. I was looking for a quick answer since I'm at work but decided to be bad and use more time searching. I only have a few reels I've done this to...and it looks like I know what I'll be doing this weekend. ?

So here's my thoughts...

While I like Daiwa reels, and have bought at least 6-8 of them over the past 12 months... A lot of them just aren't smooth or quiet reels.

I started off with a Tatula CT.  It was so noisy and annoying I exchanged it for a new one (I believe there's a video of it around here somewhere). The second one got noisy during retrieve after about two trips. Returned it too. I was done with those.

After that I bought one of the Coastal SV TWs when SO had them for $175. Used it for a couple of weeks and bought a second one. The second one is bad noisy casting and retrieving. The two reels sound/feel COMPLETELY different. It's been oiled, greased, etc, to no avail. I really like those two reels and use them alot, but they are NOT what I'd call smooth or quiet. I'll probably try a new gearset in the noisy one soon, and see if that helps.

So then I bought a plain old Tatula 100. It seemed good out of the box. Added a little oil to the spool bearings and re-greased the gears for good measure. Used it for a trip or two, and it started getting the whirrr noise and geary feeling during retrieve. Returned it for another one. The second one has been the quietest Daiwa I own.  Even quieter than my "good" Coastal (a $250 reel).

I fish two Revo SX's weekly as well, and both of them are smoother and quieter than any of the Daiwas I own.

So make of that what you will. All my Daiwas FUNCTION great, and have never given me any mechanical issues whatsoever, but they've been very hit or miss, and none of them are what I'd call smooth or quiet. I think I may try some JDM Daiwas in the future. Some around here seem to think that's the ticket to getting smooth Daiwas.

@Delaware Valley Tackle is spot on when he refers to your Fuego as a "workhorse" reel. It will provide you a lot of trouble free fishing, but don't expect it to be smooth and quiet.
