I know that it would be unpractical to used one of these chargers to re-charge my battery. I was wondering if anyone has ever used a 5 Watt Solar panel as Battery maintainer. I fish a lot from my canoe and some times I don't take a trolling motor out with me.

My thought was to use my portable unit(s) to re-charge my battery then connect it to the solar panel to just maintain the battery till the next outing.

So long as there are no loads on the battery it should be able to maintain it.

My experience with Harbor Freight is their products are the lowest common denominator.  They are very cheap and you get what you pay for if you're lucky.

I use one to recharge and maintain charge on 2 batteries on my boat. I'm usually 3 to 6 weeks between outings, so it has plenty of time to do the charging. It's been working fine for me for almost 2 years now.

Does that mean they are not good products?
In my experience with Harbor Freight that is frequently true.

I have purchased many items from harbor freight. There is one a few miles from my house. Which is nice since I can look at the stuff before I buy anything.

The stuff I have bought varies in quality. The boat trailer is very well built works very well. The bungee cords are excellent. The digital multimeter works fine. The solar charger does it job as well. Their hand tool are fine for the little use I put them through. If I turned a wrench for a living I would buy better Their power tools are the same way. I bought a circular saw for $19.00 The four times I used for some work around the house it was perfect. Now I use it to cut up pallets for the chiminea and it works well. Again, if I needed for daily use as a carpenter I would go Milwaukee, dewalt or bosch.

Buyer beware is what it comes down to.
