Rod has been used pretty heavily for over a year. Sudden failure on hookset in the handle area. All I can think of is possibly it was impacted or stepped on sometime before and failed later. I already did the repair, just wanted to get some educated information on possible reasons or problems to watch out for. Seems like a crazy place for a rod to break.

I would bet that the damage was done by something other then a hook set and the rod was damaged even before it broke. That is a very strange place for a rod to break because the break is at the thickest and strongest part of the whole blank.

Last one I saw like that was setting halfway out of the rod holder,  bait dangling in the water when a big one hit it. They had barely enough grip on the fore grip when it blew up, fish was boated on their new pistol grip rod after he backed off the drag a lot.

Ahhh... thats a thought. I know it was used for catfishing a little. I'll have to ask if a rodholder was used.

Sticking it in a crack in the dock, or between rocks can do the same thing.

Ohter than that I would say manufacturing error caused a week spot in the rod.

The rod has been used heavily for a year. That makes me think if there was a defect of some sort it would have broken long ago.

I'm pretty new to rod building though, so I guess its possible.

@E-rude dude

Its back in service... I could have painted it and kept it solid white, but the guy was more interested in functionality than appearance.
