Need new rods St Croix failed me

Need some good advice on some American made rods. We were using St Croix and had two rod tips break in the last 2 months with very little pressure. Eyecon walleye and a Premier

How old? If they have been used for a few trips maybe even a season or more and didn't break, there was no manufacturer defect.

 

Btw, the Eyecon is not made in USA.

The eye on is 2 months old and the premiere is about 4 months old. I didn’t know the eyecon want made is the US

happened to me also, but they replace it for free.

My oldest son broke my Mojo Bass. I contacted the company, and they sent me a new rod for free. They have a pretty solid warranty.

You're still well within the warranty period - reach out to St Croix.

If still under warranty, St. Croix is generally great to deal with.  

 

As far as the rod goes, the Eyecon was never exactly their best effort and the Premier is not bad but the Avid is, to me, where their best foot forward begins.  I have not had much of chance to look at the new Victory rods but they maybe a good option as well.

I'm going to ignore the American made comment and simply suggest a few low cost options.  Falcon BuCoo, Fenwick HMG, Daiwa Aird X, Berkley Lightning, Ark Invoker Pro, Ark Lancer, Ark Tharp, iRod Genesis II, Lew's TP-1 Black, Okuma EVX, H2O Xpress Ethos, Carbonlite 2.0, ALX Ikos.  I'd have added the Abu Veritas, but I hate white rods.

I have 30+ st croix rods.  Never broken a tip off and even when I am negligent they took care of it.  At first try to do the right thing

Sorry to hear that. Did you already notify St Croix? The thing is, those rods could have been damaged by the last idiot that handled them where you bought them from so I would not immediately blame St croix first. You just never know. With that said, they’re probably both still under warranty.

I am going to contact St Croix tomorrow about the rods and looking to replace the eyecon with an avid series 

Any suggestions on an avid rod for drop shot?

st croix will take care of it for you and the 6' 10" mlxf will make a very good drop shot and ned rod.

When there are multiple failures it usually indicates that the rods are being damaged by striking gunnels or similar impacts, gettin jammed, high sticked, etc.  Fish don't break rods.  Fishermen break rods.

Hey, I noticed that you recommended a rod with an x-fast tip. I've heard sometimes that a medium action is best, but i've also heard that a fast or x-fast is the way to go. So my question is, what is the best rod action for dropshot?

I have 7 drop-shot rods that I can think of off the top of my head and every one of them is XF.

There are very few rids made in the USA Today. St Croix does advertise the rods are made USA with a decal on the rods. 

Note; Shimano Zodias are made in China on the rod. 

ALX makes their rods in the USA, not all the blanks are made here. 

Dobyns rods are all made off shore.

Some G. Loomis and Lamiglas are still made in USA, it’s a short list

St Croix has excellent customer service....call them.

XF action is a good choice for drop shot because for a given total rod power the tip will be softer so that gentle bites will be sensed without the fish feeling as much resistance as they would with a slower action/same power.  When one sets the hook the lower section of the rod quickly comes into play.  I don't think it's critical, but I do believe that XF is optimum.  Probably XF action, medium power.

All G. Loomis rods are made in the states. They have yet to switch to either mexican (like St. Croix) or overseas manufacturing. I would think that its inevitable that they will one day, but so far no.

If you're going to ask them to upgrade a rod, you might look at the new Victory line up also. There is a 6' 10" ML/XF option that would be a nice drop shot rod, or a 7' 1" M/F if you want a more all around spinning rod option.
