Super User DitchPanda Posted April 4, 2021 Super User Posted April 4, 2021 So its just about time for the asparagus and morels to start popping in my neck of the woods. Got me thinking...who out there likes to forage wild edibles? What do you hunt down? 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted April 4, 2021 Global Moderator Posted April 4, 2021 My buddies have been finding morels already. As much as I like food, I’m not going stomping in the woods looking for mushrooms. That’s a negative calorie ratio haha. My fiancé cooks chanterelles that she finds while on horseback and they are tasty 2 Quote

Nelson Delaney Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 I picked 50+ lbs of wild Concord grapes last year. Squeezed to juice & made a batch of wine. Also have a black raspberry patch in the yard that gets made to wine every year. 1 Quote

Man after my own heart. I also make wine every few years from the black raspberry patch in my yard. Trade a few bottles with an acquaintance who makes mead and melomel. 1 Quote
Deephaven Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 I'd love to...but am not educated enough on what is edible. Morels and ramps we hunt, but beyond that not so much. Wish there was a class I could take with my 9 & 11 year old. They are already trained on how to find wild berries when we camp, but more things to add to the meal the better. 1 Quote

They are expensive and difficult haha In all seriousness you should be able to purchase a field guide for your area and take it with you foraging. There are only two really dangerous mushrooms where I live. One of them is white as snow and called the death Angel and the other looks like the mushroom from Mario. You can’t miss those! Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 7, 2021 Global Moderator Posted April 7, 2021 I can't find morels to save my life and I don't eat them even if I could. I sure would love to sell them for the $20 a pound that people pay for them though. No desire to deal with the ticks either though. I grew up picking wild strawberries, grapes, plums, blackberries, and crabapples. Most of them were just turned into jelly but some of them were cooked into recipes. Quote

I've had mixed results finding morels. Most time I find none...every now and then I find a few. Last year however I stumbled across a pile. Was fishing at my local pond and happened to find them where ive never seen them...found 37 I believe it was in a spot smaller then my living room. 2 Quote

Try cote de Blancs yeast with a bit of wine tannin added. Makes a delicious “dry sweet” wine. Quote

E-rude dude Posted April 12, 2021 Posted April 12, 2021 As soon as I see a grilled chicken sandwich, side of fries, and a vanilla shake growing outta the ground, I’m in? Seriously though, the wife and I have really been getting into gardening since we bought our house. Store bought veggies are just tasteless and horrible anymore. We really look forward to fresh radish, tomato, cucumber, onion, green bean, etc. 1 Quote
