I have always been of a mind I would throw a single hook bait on graphite MH firm rod, MAYBE a H in certain circumstances. So for me that would mean I would use something like this for a chatter bait or a spinner bait. Now I read a lot about guys going to a glass or composite road for chatter baits but not so much for spinner baits. Do you view the two baits as different really?

(shrugs) For me, the same MH/F rig is used for chatters, spinners, jigs and T-Rigs...don't see a need for a different rod for those.

There is nothing wrong using the same rod for multiple lures/applications.  Although there are specific rod actions people may prefer to use for certain lures, but it is not a absolutely necessary to catch fish.

Obviously. I was asking why a lot people view them as two different types of baits that some people use different rod types for. I view them as similar and certainly similar enough to view them as the same rod type.

I certainly feel they are different applications.

I throw a chatterbait into grass in anticipation of ripping it through. The glass or blended rod allow me to rip a bait with enough power, but not with so much speed the bass can't grab it.

I throw spinnerbaits into wood often, a type of cover I avoid at all costs with a bladed jig. I use a graphite stick for these applications as I want to set the hook hard and turn the bass away from the cover.

I also use my glass rod to throw med/deep divers. I fish from a kayak and every rod I bring needs to pull double or triple duty.

Glass used to be popular for spinnerbaits. My Team Daiwa S 7' rod says crankbait/spinnerbait and it is glass.

1980 called.....they want their glass rods back.

I'm one of those that just can't comprehend why you would choose a glass or composite rod, when you can have a graphite rod that is lighter, more sensitive and duplicates the same power & action.

Yes, I use the same rod for both as they do not differ in application.

Let's keep in mind that there is a wide array of "spinner baits" out there that produce vastly different drag through the water.  A large spinner with two medium Colorado blades or a huge willow blades is going to produce much more drag going through the water than a Strike King Mini King with a single, small Colorado or a large inline spinner.  If you fish a rod without enough backbone it's going to stay bent in half throughout the retrieve.

I fish medium/large spinner baits on literally the same set-up as I fish 3/8 and larger bladed jigs.  It's a 7'3 MH Duckett Terex with a moderate-ish tip.  It's absolutely perfect for these applications.  I can, however, see why someone would want to use glass because I've often thought my glass crankbait rod would likely work well also.  If it's a smaller spinner or has smallish willow blades then I'll throw it on a rod with a little less backbone and a moderate-ish tip.

This is also an important consideration because I fish both the bladed jig and the spinner through grass and in wood.  I love running a vibrating jig down the length of a fallen log.  Where/how the op fishes them may decide the appropriate set-up.

Chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, underspins, swim jigs, sometimes even my deep diving cranks all get thrown on the same rod/reel/line.  That's why I have two identical setups on my kayaks all the time.

The rod I choose depends on the weight of the bait I am fishing with. Chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and large crankbaits all get thrown on the same rig.

I throw them both on a 7’2 MH/F Poison Adrena or a 7’6 MH/F MB Levante Braillist.

Yes, and no. I have 3 different spinnerbait rods, based on weight and blade combinations and how I'm fishing them, 2 of them work for chatter baits and the third doesn't. I throw 1/4 and 3/8 chatters on one rod, and 1/2 and up on another. As long as they can handle the casting and working the bait, and aren't too fast, I don't find chatters demanding on the rod specifics as some other baits do. I fish chatters on heavy mono 90% of the time.

I think you could ask 10 pro’s and not get a consistent answer.  I call my Witch Doctor composite my spinnerbait/chatterbait rod but in reality, I am just as likely to have one tied on one of my MH/F graphite rods.  The main thing I want is a little tip to load.

Nope.  I throw a spinnerbait on my chatter bait rod.  I use two different combos for spinnerbaits because of the significant difference in applications.  When burning in open water for smallmouth the composite gets the duty. When working a spinnerbait in stained water with heavy cover, wood, pads, bushes and so on, the MH extra fast on 20 floor always gets that duty.

Here’s the analogy: An NHL defenseman  wall checking a player at speed in comparison to a nose guard stuffing a tail back.

Yes I throw both on same rod and have never had any issues with either! Obviously people like different rods for different things.  Use what works for u and if u wanna use the same rod for both it'll work just fine

Bladed Jig gets Dobyns 736CB

Spinnerbait gets whatever MH/F rod I grab out of the rod box.

Something that has not been mentioned yet here.  The reel makes a difference (even though the OP specifically asked about the rod, not the reel).  Generally I reel a chatterbait slower than a spinner bait so a reel with a slower retrieve might be beneficial.  You could simply reel slower too if you can make yourself do that.

If you're use to slow-rolling spinners near the bottom, you shouldn't have an issue slowing the retrieve for chatters. As I said earlier - same rod/reel for both here.

I don't overthink it because I don't have that luxury ? I only own 3 casting rods and 2 spinning rods. ( Please don't ever let me use your custom rods, I don't want to know what I'm missing!!!) ? I catch my fair share of fish on all my set-ups, I choose the best rod at my disposal for the lure I'm using. Bad enough I have this lure monkey on my back!  I'm sure all of the bait and technic specific rods available are better than what I use, but thankfully, I will still eat if I get skunked. ?

It comes down to how specialized you want to be.  I don't throw chatterbaits and spinnerbaits nearly as much as other presentations so I use my 7' MH Sweeper St Croix rod for both.  I'll also use that rod for buzzbaits.  I look at it as a slightly slower action which helps with those single hook applications.

7' MH Fast St. Croix Avid and a Shimano Curado for Spinnerbaits

For Chatterbaits I had what I thought was the perfect combo but it went overboard and would have been impossible to find.....  G. Loomis PR844C GLX and a Shimano Core 101MG.  The PR844C loaded perfectly and I could cast a chatterbait as far as anything else.   I tried several rods for this technique and this rod was the only one that had that magical feel to it.
