clemsondds Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 Just bought a St Croix Avid X 6'10 MXF spinning rod on a whim...for really light jerkbaits. Wondering what else this rod will be really good for. Any thoughts? Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted April 1, 2021 Super User Posted April 1, 2021 I use spinning gear for jerk baits as well. I use an older ( purchased 2002-03?) Shimano 6'3" Medium/Ex fast tip. Over the years I've tried other rods for a trip or two, but I've always came back to this one. I think that my jerk bait rod would get steamed if I tried to repurpose or multipurpose it - so I don't. Right now, that rod is a starter, doesn't see a whole lot of action, but it is a starter. I think it would feel demeaned if I tried to work it into the line up as a multi-purpose rod. Your rod might feel differently. Quote
JohnnyF Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 I've used mine for heavier drop shotting, flukes, and wacky senkos Quote

Super User FishTank Posted April 1, 2021 Super User Posted April 1, 2021 Weightless soft plastic, lighter swim baits (Keitech Easy Shiner), tubes, and hair jigs and finesse jigs. Basically what J Francho said above. Quote
Emiliano Posted April 1, 2021 Posted April 1, 2021 blade baits, little lipless and tiny squarebill 1/4 - 3/8 oz Quote

Super User Columbia Craw Posted April 2, 2021 Super User Posted April 2, 2021 Smaller square bills and top water baits. Quote

Anything heavier, and I use an AC62MXF pre IPC Avid. Quote

clemsondds Posted April 2, 2021 Author Posted April 2, 2021 Flukes and light swim baits is a good idea. I have two other spinning rods that are more “high end” that I assumed I would use for more sensitivity requiring techniques...not sure how the avid x will be on sensitivity. Quote
riskkid 2 Posted April 2, 2021 Posted April 2, 2021 I use mine for topwater when the weather warms up. Pop R's and Sammies. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 The answer depends on what you like for a jerkbait rod. In my case it’s a medium power, fast action with a soft tip. It throws light square bills, drop shot and shaky heads. Quote
Bakablo1 Posted April 4, 2021 Posted April 4, 2021 Usually jumping between jerkbaits and light topwater Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 4, 2021 Super User Posted April 4, 2021 Different colored jerkbaits. Different brands as well. 1 Quote
