As the topic says, can you use a mono on your main line then put in a fluoro leader (either via a knot or swivel)? Or better to just spool the entire line with fluoro? I am planning to use 4lb mono then use 4lb fluoro as my leader. Does that make sense? I'm fishing trout primarily.

I believe for not so clear waters, mono would do but we have creeks here that has very clear and in those instances, I would attach the fluoro as leader.

Also, it will save some money since I will only be using the fluoro line if needed...

Apologies for the newbie question. Thanks.

of course you can splice mono and fluoro.

I do something similar for coast fishing on UL, but I'm attaching larger fluoro leader for abrasion resistance.

Double-uni or surgeon's knot both work for similar diameters  but you can also loop-to-loop by putting a surgeon's loop or perfection loop on each.  The loop-to-loop is actually stronger with different diameters.

I'd split the difference...in fact I have.

My Light-rig has 40yds of mono backing then 60yds of 6# InvizX. Forget trying to go mono-FC leader...only time I use leaders is with braid as the mainline...and sometimes I dispense with having a leader depending on the technique.

Been there and done that. Works just fine. Lake Taneycomo, with no current. Water so clear you could see a dime hit the bottom 20’ down. 4lb test mono with 7X tippet material for a leader. About 2lb test leader. Only way to get bit some days.

I do that on my spinning rods. I use 10# Sufix Siege for a main line, tie on a barrel swivel and use about a 24" leader of 8# Seaguar Red Label florocarbon.

I think you can splice the two different lines and maybe achieve your desired results. But remember, when you splice you reduce breakage strength at the knot to about 80-90%. Personally I would go with all fluoro or all mono depending on the application.

Absolutely doable for what you are intending. So many fly guys use their own tapered leader designs which are nothing but short segments of different mono/fluoro lines tied together to create exactly what they want. I know a few bass guys that do it, too.

Just curious...have your bass guys shared their reason for tapering their leaders this way?

The bass guys I was referring to are non-fly, but use the fluoro leader for extra abrasion resistance (mostly) and weight for wacky or other finesse presentations. The fly guys, bass, trout, etc. use it for weight/power transfer, if I’m not mistaken.

Got it...I misunderstood.  I thought you were saying the bass guys used these alternating mono to fluoro tapered leaders as well and I couldn’t imagine the purpose.  I don’t know much about the fly world.  Thanks for the clarification.
