$50 rod use Straight 15 lb Big Game forget wasting money on braid.

Tom

He's gonna use the rod for frogging and add a leader for glides...that's why the braid.

Lol...I think you have made an assumption...I don’t see that distinction in the post or in the replies.  It has even been suggested to ditch the braid and go straight mono.  People use braid to leader for multiple reasons and while your assumption may be correct, there is certainly nothing in the post to suggest such.

Really? I made an assumption? The original post said he's gonna throw glides\swimbaits and frogs. Plus I'm the buddy he mentioned in that post...we have been fishing together for almost ten years...I'm the one who suggested what line to get for leader.

But yeah your right I assumed.

Was the distinction made in the post?  Where exactly does it say he would be using braid only for frogs?  It says he would be using a specific rod and reel for glides/swimbaits and frogs and wanted to know what leader to use.  If you were the buddy referred to and had unshared information that could influence feedback, why wouldn’t you or the OP clarify when asking others for advice?

And if you are the buddy, why not say so when you said he was using braid for frogs.  I wouldn’t have said you assumed and this whole convo could have been avoided.

Well he was asking about leader so I thought it was clear that its was for glides...don't think alot of people use leader for frogs. That's why I responded to @WRB on why he wasn't going straight mono...since that's not preferred for frogs. I didn't clarify because it wasn't my post and didn't know I needed to...looks like most people understood the needs without extra clarification. Maybe your right and I assumed to much.

My logic was why spend 50% of the rod value on line.

Fair enough...I was probably making some assumptions as well.  I guess my main assumption was if he was going to use leader for glides & swimbaits only, why even include frogs in the question.  I don’t think it is unreasonable to assume that the inclusion of frogs without other clarifying information might indicate the question of leader use was for all 3 applications.

Edit:  There are a lot of things people say they do on this board that I would have thought were rare ?.

Cause even more people would have chimed in for him to go straight mono, you know the braid haters on this site, so the inclusion of frogs was needed to merit the use of braid.

So straight braid for frog use.

Add leader when switching to swimbaits and glides bait as needed.

I mostly use mono for backing so cant say what mono to use for leader.

Fair enough but my comments had nothing to do with straight mono.

This is almost as entertaining as the Texas deep bass thread....

I do probably have a bit of an unhealthy fixation on the topic right now.  That link I shared has my mind going in all directions.

Man, haven’t checked on my thread for a few days and this kinda blew up! In my OP, like @DitchPanda said, I just  assumed most would know i would throw straight braid when fishing frogs and that the leader question was geared towards the use of the glides/swimbaits.  I also now realize that I probably didn’t need to include the info on the use of of frogs with the set up in the OP. So let’s all go back to being friends.  Anyway, I ended up going with Big Game due to a good amount of recommendations on it and it was easy for me to get a hold of. Hoping it gets some good tests coming up in the next few weeks as the weather looks like it’s gonna get the fish putting in the feed bag before the spawn here in Iowa.  Thanks for all the recommendations everyone, I really appreciate all the help!

This will be a loaded topic and you'll get many different answers. If I was going to use a mono-leader, it would be good ol' Trilene XL or maybe Sufix Siege. To me, spooling Siege on a reel is equivalent to putting a clock spring on it...super stiff and I wouldn't suffer anyone with it spooled up...but it is tough as nails and should be good for a leader.

Again...Trilene XL is long proven and I pulled what I'm sure was a 500 lb log off the bottom of the Wisconsin river one trip with XL 17 lb.

For frogging, I'd just skip the leader.

*Good suggestions - I would add Big Game mono in the dull green color as well .
