Squidly Posted March 27, 2021 Posted March 27, 2021 Has anyone here ever had any issues buying a JDM reel? I've never bought one, but I'm really tempted to try and snag one of the new Scorpion DCs when they come out. I've never done maintenance on a baitcaster, so I'm kinda skeptical about not being able to send it to Shimano for anything, including warranty. That being said, do you think the Scorpion would be worth it over the Curado? Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 27, 2021 Super User Posted March 27, 2021 I have bought around 25-30 JDM reels, no problem doing so. What model Scorpion vs what model Curado? 1 Quote
GReb Posted March 27, 2021 Posted March 27, 2021 New Scorpion will have a MGL spool and IDC5 brakes instead of the IDC4 in Curado. I’ve never owned a DC but if I were to buy one I’d go Scorpion. No warranty is not a big deal to me. Quote
RDB Posted March 27, 2021 Posted March 27, 2021 I have also bought quite a few including one several weeks ago and the only problem I had was that I ordered something from Tackle Warehouse at the same time and received my JDM reel before Tackle Warehouse even processed my order. 3 Quote
Super User ATA Posted March 27, 2021 Super User Posted March 27, 2021 I can say all of my reels are JDM, Also couple of my travel rods, they were free shipping with fedex and arrived very fast. 2 Quote

It'd be the new 2021 Scorpion DC 150HG, versus the current Curado DC 150HG. 10 hours ago, GReb said: New Scorpion will have a MGL spool and IDC5 brakes instead of the IDC4 in Curado. I also can't seem to find a solid release date for the new Scorpion, other than Spring 2021. Does anybody have some site recommendations that I should check? The only one I've really looked at is Digitaka. Quote

CrankFate Posted March 28, 2021 Posted March 28, 2021 If your worried about warranties it means don’t buy it. Warranties only matter with low quality goods. The chances there will be a problem with a new Shimano Scorpion DC from a reputable seller are around 0% - if I think I need a warranty, I think I’d buy something else. I consider the warranty to be a scam stat to trick people into buying something with a bigger number on it. The only fishing reel I ever sent for warranty service was a two speed, because the Belleville washers are spring loaded, popped off and disappeared. They repaired it free, even though it was user error. But I didn’t “need” the warranty, I broke the reel by losing the washers. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 28, 2021 Super User Posted March 28, 2021 I purchased three reels with no problems. I was concerned with the warranty at first but the cost savings and the availability of parts made it a none issue. I will probably be ordering again in the future as I lost one (rod and reel) today. 2 Quote

I have had to pay for a repair on a JDM reel that would have been covered by warranty a single time, a bad pinion gear on an old Zillion SV. But I have saved like 5 times that much buying JDM reels, so it still works out to a better deal. 3 Quote
