I know I like spinning and baitcasting rigs all set and ready to go. But that can $$$ for some folks. Do any of you swap reels between different rods to save $$$?

Posted

I usually dont do it to save money.

I'll do it the see how a different setup might work together. Sometimes they feel great, sometimes not so good. But you dont know until you try.

How else are you going to know how a reel feels on any particular rod?

I’m asking as I have a HF that will see limited use, but have a MHF that will see much more action, and I’m contemplating swapping a Fuego CT between them vs purchasing another separate reel.

I have more rods than reels and yes I switch reels between rods all the time. A lot of time it either shimano reel on Daiwa rod, or Daiwa reel on shimano rod. ?

I think most people aren't reading the question as I am. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think you are asking if someone brings 2 rods (MH and a H) and 1 reel and fishes let's say a Texas rig on the MH and then swaps the reel over to the H rod and throws a frog. If that is what I think you mean, then no I don't. However, I can see where that might be beneficial in a situation where you didn't mind swapping out. I have plenty of room for rods and reels so I don't think this would help me, but yes, I can see where this might help someone out.

This is how I read it too. And I agree, you could swap switch rods with that reel.

Well, not so much swapping reels between two rods out on the boat, but close to your scenario. I have a Fuego CT on a HF that will likely see infrequent use, and I have a new MHF rod on the way that will see more frequent use. I was thinking of just keeping the reel on the MHF and on the occasion I want the HF for frogs or larger swimbaits, just swap the reel.

It’s a thought.

I swap reels between rods all the time, but very rarely mid trip.

I swap reels and rods for just that reason.

I have more reels than rods.  I switch reels depending on the application.  For example I have 2 rods for heavy applications that now are mounted up with 5:1 reels and braid for Arigs.  They will soon be getting a couple of E 7s.

I do it according to the seasons.  In the winter and early spring I don't really need two MH/F rods, so I'll swap out one of my reels for a M/F which works better for jerkbaits and such.  Then, in the later spring through the fall I'm more likely to need multiple MH/F rod for soft plastics, so it gets switched back in.  And sometimes if I go to a different lake or have a specific presentation in mind, I'll switch between the two outside of their normal season.  I also have a few complete setups that I'll switch in and out depending on what I'm doing and the time of year, but that's not what your asking.

I never switch rods and reels on the water though.  All of that gets done at home.  It's too easy for something to get lost or damaged on the water.

I have the exact opposite problem, with all of my classic Abu reels I swap reels to see which feels the best and if I want to run an old round body vs low profile for that day.

edited to add: I refuse to switch reels between rods while actually out on the water.

I generally carry 2 or 3 spare reels, sometimes in the boat, more often in the fishing truck.  These are for when I backlash a reel so bad that I don't want to fool with it right then, it is much easier to just pull out another reel and go.   Seems to me that swapping out reels between different rods during a fishing trip would be a waste of fishing time, so I don't do that - but I can see how some folks might.

If a reel betrays me by backlashing during a fishing trip - I don't want to fish with it, for the rest of the day, anyway.  That reel needs to sit on the bench for a while, near the action, but without any chance of being in the action, to reflect on the errors of its ways & and not backlash on me again.

? ?. Love it.

I rarely change reel/rod once I’ve decided I like the way they are. I have 7 rigs + my kids 2 setups. Once I get them set that’s it.

I sort of have that happening with a MH rod and a spooled spare spool. For fishing frogs, mice and some punching. I have not bought a reel for it yet because I don’t know what I want yet. The rod is a Bass X. I love the rod. Might just put a BPS Pro qualifier on it. Not looking to put a high dollar reel on it because I’m not throwing it nearly as much as my other stuff. But I’m against putting a piece of low priced junk on it either. The rod is a great rod for the price.

You should be fine all day long. Are you using braid to leader for your line & switching leader sizes between the two?

Yes It is ok to change reels on your rods as long as it helps you fish better.

I do for my Chronarch 50e. I had two, but when i went mostly spinning,

I sold one and kept the rod. So I swap the 50e between a 6'6" MH and

a 6'6" ML. Heavier stuff and lighter stuff. Works out fine for me :) .

No. That reel has 12 lb YZH. My frogging is normally close and not in heavy cover.
