johnsmith Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 Why do Dobyn fans prefer longer rods? I see people are always recommending the longer version of the rod over the 7 ft model for practically everything regardless of technique Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted March 20, 2021 Super User Posted March 20, 2021 It’s a conspiracy. 1 2 Quote
Big_Easy_Bassin Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 I’ve noticed a ton of guys recommending longer rods (at least long for me) for certain applications. I’m not a tall guy and I’m not a short guy (5’10” give or take), but I think it’s all personal preference. I usually go with a shorter rod that what “most” would recommend, but that’s just me. I also mostly fish shallow water and make (or at least try to make) precision casts around cover... so that might have a lot to do with my preference for shorter rods. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted March 20, 2021 Super User Posted March 20, 2021 To be serious, when you combine the various series by Dobyns, the 734C is the all time best seller. The demand for longer rods is what drove the expansion to rods exceeding seven feet. All the longer options was a huge factor in my trying them in the first place. 1 Quote
LCG Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 I think it's personal preference and marketing trends. I fish from a kayak and the bank, I prefer 6'6"-7'0 rods. 6'8-6'10" is my sweet spot. No desire for a rod longer than 7'. I recently picked up a dobyns fury 703c, no fish on it yet as it's just starting to warm up now. It seems decent and has a nice action to it, but need more time with it. Always hear positive things about it, so figured I would try it out. Still prefer winn grips over cork, but that's not a fault of the rod, just my preference. 1 Quote
kayaking_kev Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 I've had a 6'3", 6'6", (6) x 7'0", 7'2", (3) x 7'3", 7'4", & 7'5" Dobyns, and my favorite length is the 7'0". Outside of the Xtasys my favorites are the DX 702c, FR 703c, DC 704cb Glass. The DC 734c wasn't really for me. My least favorite Dobyns though was probably the DC 736cb Glass, it was heavy and didn't have the balance to make up for it. Quote

Longer rods are "in". Not this little gray duck. I'm perfectly happy sticking with 7'-nil rods. Just wish the Fury line had a 5-power in a 7'...might have to up to the Sierra when I'm ready to upgrade my Aird-X H/F. Quote
Ben77 Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 It's really all personal preference. I used to fish 6'6" all the time but when I went to 7'0" there was no looking back. Quote

Recently picked up a F733C and F734C and love them. 733 launches a weightless senko and accuracy is good once I got used to the longer action. The extra length really seems to make hooksets effortless as well with a smooth reel and sweep. Quote
