cheezyridr Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 so, back in the day, one of my favorite lures to throw was a spence scout. anyone remember them? i caught lots of fish on them, they were a good lure. why would something like that, which worked no longer be in production? i wonder if there are other lures that were good ones, but are no longer made. are there any that you miss? papajoe222 Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 One big reason is a lot of the companies that originally made those baits were bought out or merged with others. If each company had similar baits, guess which one would still be in production? Another is cost vs. profit. Even baits that are still produced are done so with less expensive components. The results are two-fold: Higher profit and to keep the purchase price at, or near where it was. A prime example, IMO, is a Wiggle Wart. However in that case the price actually increased. Quote

Super User WRB Posted March 20, 2021 Super User Posted March 20, 2021 Spence water scout has a long history starting by the original Walters water scout 100 years ago. Charles Spence bought the brand when he started Strike King company with Bill Dance and named it the lure Spence Water Scout. Your lure is a later 90’s plastic version. Tom 2 Quote

Tom you're right, i looked for a pic of the wooden one in chartreuse, but couldn't find one. it didn't have the dark circles around the eyes. Quote
Super User king fisher Posted March 21, 2021 Super User Posted March 21, 2021 I had the Strike King Spence Scout, and a similar lure made by Cotton Cordell. The Cordell one had a molded plastic lip, and the small fin toward the back was also plastic. Both came with skirts, and caught many bass. I can't remember the name of the Cordell one. 1 Quote

I still use both the Spence Scout and the Cordell plastic model which was also called a Scout. They are excellent lures for shallow water with heavy wooden cover. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 22, 2021 Global Moderator Posted March 22, 2021 I had a white and blue Spence Scout for awhile when I was a kid. Don't remember ever catching anything on it. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted March 22, 2021 Super User Posted March 22, 2021 I'm sure one of the newer "egg" wake baits with a hackled rear treble will mimic or even out perform that lure. Quote
MAN Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 I really don't see anything different in that, and the current shallow cranks, other than outdated material/paint job. Quote

We could test it a new wake bait against one of these two I bought these back in the late 70's and have only changed the hooks & skirts. They are the wooden models and while they don't appear as slick as the newer wake baits, they can devastating in the water. It definitely shows these fish something they have never seen before. Quote
