In pervious posts I’ve written asking for rod suggestions Dobyn’s has always been highly recommended by numerous folks. I’ve finally decided to pull the trigger and get one. I need a new frog rod, so I’ve been looking at the 735C. I’m also planning to use it for flipping and pitching, so I’m hoping someone can give me some advice about what kind of weight it can handle. I see it’s rated for 1/4-1.5oz. How light and how heavy do you guys feel is reasonable on this model? I’ve also considered the 734C as a frog rod, but I throw a frog in some pretty heavy cover so I’m thinking it might not be enough.

First, the 734 will be under powered. The 735 has ample power for frogs and heavy cover.  It is a braid friendly rod.  The reality is the sweet spot for the 735 Fury is 5/8 ounce.  I would put the realistic maximum at 7/8 oz.  Once you move beyond that you will want to move to a 765 or 805 Flip. That 1.5 maximum range was established for lob casting larger swim baits which it will do.  Lob casting. Hope that helps.

Thank you @Columbia Craw. I usually don’t go over 3/4oz when flipping, but it’s nice to know it can handle a tad bit more if necessary.

I got the Siera and use it for frogs, buzz baits, swim baits and heavy spinnerbaits

Haven’t used it for pitching or flipping which I’m sure it would do fine at, but it’s too soft for my liking.

Do you have the 735 model? And when you say soft, do you mean the tip?

I fish both the fury 734 and 735. 735 is what you want for frogs. I have flipped upto an ounce on it with the sweet spot 1/2-3/4.

Yes, the 735C.
I like an XF action for flipping and/or pitching.
The power, balance and weight of the rod is great.
It does everything I use it for very well.

I’m mainly going to use it for frogs. I like a rod with a little more tip for pretty much all plastics and jigs as well.

Then you made the right choice.

The 734C will work for frogs but in open water or light cover situations only. The 735C will allow you to throw the frog in cover and will also work well for flipping and pitching as well.

It doesn't actually have the most tip for the latter applications and it will work in many cases but in real heavy cover where you need that fast tip to pull them out quickly, you might prefer something with a faster tip as mentioned (I think the 765FLIP or 805FLIP have more tip). They do cast jigs nicely though.

What reel do you have it paired with? Just wondering how much it weighs.

A 10yr old BPS Pro Qualifier spoiled with 50# original Power Pro.

No idea how much it weighs but balances it darn near perfect.
