johnsmith Posted March 17, 2021 Posted March 17, 2021 For 1/2 walking baits, 20lb or 30lb braid? Cover is very minimal. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 17, 2021 Global Moderator Posted March 17, 2021 I use 20lb straight braid Quote
Super User islandbass Posted March 17, 2021 Super User Posted March 17, 2021 I prefer mono for top water, but braid is not a bad choice at all. Quote
JohnFromLisbon Posted March 17, 2021 Posted March 17, 2021 I use 20 lb braid to a short 12 to 15 lb mono leader, just to keep the braid from getting tangled on the trebles Quote
Super User NHBull Posted March 17, 2021 Super User Posted March 17, 2021 30# braid or 11# Defier Armilio (sp) Quote

Super User Deleted account Posted March 17, 2021 Super User Posted March 17, 2021 No braid for top water for me (other than frogs). If I had to, I would probably go with 40. I like to walk the dog with 15-20 lb mono, smaller ones and poppers on 12. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 17, 2021 Super User Posted March 17, 2021 20 lb braid with a 12lb. Big Game green or Maxima Ultragreen leader. https://youtu.be/PNaFczbbKEU?t=36 A-Jay 3 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted March 17, 2021 Super User Posted March 17, 2021 Mono is less likely to foul up the treble hooks, so I go with 10lb mono for Zara Spooks and other, similar topwaters. But either braid should work okay for you. I doubt you'd notice a difference on the water either way. The difference between 20# and 30# braid isn't much. I pretty much stick to 10#, 30# and 60# braid. Unlike mono, copoly, and fluoro, the difference between pound tests and line diameters in braid isn't all that much until you get out to the extremes. I find the number of fouled casts isn't enough to frustrate me as compared to the lack of feel/control that a flexier line imparts. Whenever possible I try to not use a leader and outside of the occasional wrap up on the cast there is no reason to here in my opinion. 3 Quote
huZZah Posted March 17, 2021 Posted March 17, 2021 I do straight braid for top water and I don’t get any more foul ups than with mono. It’s usually my cast that decides if it lands well or not, not the line used. Although it’s possible using mono allows you a better chance it lands well with a poor cast? But I haven’t really noticed. My suggestion is using a larger diameter braid and/or heavier top water lure. And/or practice casting. These affect the foul up rate for me more than anything else. Skunkmaster-k Posted March 17, 2021 Posted March 17, 2021 Straight 20# mono . It keeps me from ripping hooks out. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted March 18, 2021 Super User Posted March 18, 2021 15 lb or 10 lb Big Game Quote

It happens occasionally, but the pros outweigh the cons in the solid hookups at distance and long casting ability. Quote
