To the basics and really pair things down? Don't get me wrong I like having tons of rods and reels and endless baits..fun to tinker with crap and have tons of options. But I think if all I had was 2 medhvy bait casters and a med spinning rod, some 15lb big game and 8lb trilene, couple poppers, a few spinner baits, some 3/0 hooks, 1/8 and 1/4 bullet weights( lead not that new fangled tungsten!)and a few bags of worms and lizards I'd catch fish.

Sorry maybe that's my inner old man talking...trying to shun new technology! Am I the only one who feels this way some times?

I hear where you are coming from. I find that some times I have to go back to basics and reel it back in. Go back to some old school stuff.

No, you're not. I constantly have on my mind the goal given many years ago by a friend of my father; "One rod, one reel, and a handful of lures." Maybe someday I'll get there. ?     jj

If I could ALSO go back in chronological years,  I'd forgo almost all of my shiny equipment.  I know enough now that with some pretty basic stuff, I could do at least...okay.  Better than I did my first "time around."

I’m to the point now and have been for awhile that I only buy to replenish.

I don’t try anything new just for the sake of trying something else or just to experiment because it looks good.
What I use is what I have confidence in and are proven producers.

Sometimes me and my brothers just go fishing with ultralight combos and merc a bunch of bluegill with bobber and worms. Its fun sometimes to take a break from more "advanced" forms of fishing and just not stress about catching big fish and just catch a lot of scrappy panfish, its how I started fishing and I still do it from time to time.

If I could turn the hands of time back 51 years, then I would definitely like to fish the way I did when I was 10.

In the mean time, I like where I'm at.

I have a wall full of trophy's and what's left of my mind of memories. Boatless for the 1st time in 25 years. Back to basics teaching the next generation what's important in life.

My bass boat is loaded with stuff but my kayak is a simple affair. Two rods, a tray of lures, and a container of soft plastics. I like both experiences for different reasons.

That's how I feel about bluegill. Yes I spend the majority of my time pursuing bass , but if it ever gets to the point when I don't enjoy having a beautiful gill pull a float under its time to hang it up. Something so simple and pure about the pan fishing gig.

Like Michicander my boat has several rods and baits but when I'm in the kayak I usually carry 1 rod some hooks, sinkers and a pack or two of worms.  I use my vest for my tackle.

I only own 2 bait casters and 1 spinning rod... But I do have a lot of tackle. I like it simple, even on my boat. I do like my electronics on the boat tho ? that being said, I love to watch my grandkids fish almost as much as I like to fish.

No

I like the innovation and new stuff.  Rods, reels and tackle continue to evolve.

I have thought about it ~ I've always said; "Give me five lures and a decent rod and reel and I'm good to go." But you know what,  I like throwing everything from a little Ned rig a to an eight inch swim-bait. I like to fish from the bottom of the lake to on top the water. I like to have fast baits and s-l-o-w baits, white baits to black baits and every color in between. I need tight wiggles and wide wobbles, gliders and chuggers, chatter baits and spinner baits and the list goes on. Getting a new (hot) lure is like Christmas when I was a kid. I read everything on the box, take it out and admire it, shake it, fondle it and can't wait to try it ~ on my NEW rod and reel! No, Keeping it simple is just not as fun...

Mike

I’ve been finding that same thing for a handful of years now. Restock myself to a certain level which doesn’t mean to the point of TW’s warehouse inventory.

I do find myself wanting to experiment some. For this season I picked up a few Xzone sponsor baits. And a few of the Rapala OG Slims. Life long Rapala junkie. I have no doubts about these baits, my plan is to throw them all season like any Rapala I fish.

But I still find myself fishing many of the lures I used the heck out of years ago. They just get you bites. Tubes, Grubs, Mepps spinners, Rebel Craws, Mann’s Baby minus, Heddons, Storm Chug Bugs. These things are with me all the time.

I rather fish it with my rods now. But I still have all of my old Mitchell and Fenwick rods, Shimano Bantams w/ pistol grip, old lightning Rods. Can’t seem to part with any of this stuff.

Anybody ever wanna go back?

That's probably gonna be a no!

Some modern technology I can do without, like down imaging, side imaging, & forward imaging. Show me where the breaklines are I can do the rest.

I've got rod-n-reels that weigh ounces compared to pounds.

I don't need an $80k bass boat but I need one that will get me off the water safely.

I like having a lot of rod reel combos with tackle selection. I can't really recall getting bass thumb before all this gear.
