Ben77 Posted March 15, 2021 Posted March 15, 2021 Just wondering what hook would be best for bigger bulkier worms. What would be a better hook up ratio? Would you go ewg or offset round bend thanks. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 15, 2021 Global Moderator Posted March 15, 2021 I like EWG hooks. The Gamakatsu Monster Worm hook is my favorite. 1 Quote

Super User BrianMDTX Posted March 15, 2021 Super User Posted March 15, 2021 For worms or stick baits with e diameter of a 5” Senko or less, I prefer round offset worm hooks. For larger diameters I step up to EWG hooks. Normally 3/0 or 4/0 depending on length. For 10”-12” worms, I’d use a 4/0; maybe a 5/0. 3 Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 15, 2021 Super User Posted March 15, 2021 Big worms like Uptons 13” Owner 5110 worm hook 7/0 9” -10” Owner 5103 5/0 or 5167W light CPS 6/0 depending on worm diameter. Tom 1 Quote

I know there have been countless threads debating EWG vs round bend etc etc and the bottom line is there are different opinions backed by good experience by excellent anglers. @Bluebasser86 just curious is there a specific reason you feel EWGs are best for this or you just go with it and it works? In my stocks of larger hooks I happen to have a bunch of EWGs so I plan to try those first. Quote
Super User Catt Posted March 15, 2021 Super User Posted March 15, 2021 My personal weapon of choice is Mustad Grip-Pin Big Bite Hooks. They are a round bend offset style with a deep, wide round bend & a 2X long shank. With longer worms I want the hook point farther back! 1 Quote

KP Duty Posted March 15, 2021 Posted March 15, 2021 I use lunker city Texposer in 5/0. These hooks were made for soft stickbaits/Sluggo's, and have a longer shank. Very sharp. https://lunkercity.com/products/texposer-hook?variant=18480507256894 Quote

In my stocks of larger hooks I happen to have a bunch of EWGs so I plan to try those first. I've always had better success with EWG hooks than round bend worm hooks. For a 10" worm, a 5/0 is just fine. I've got some 17" hand pours that are thicker than my thumb so I needed something with a lot of hook gap for baits like that. 1 Quote
Ben77 Posted March 15, 2021 Author Posted March 15, 2021 I might try the owner oversize worm hook in the 7/0 with a mustad fastach worm weight in 1/4 for some swinging action and see how it goes. I have some 5/0 ewg gammy's that I will try as well. Thanks for all the feedback! Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 15, 2021 Super User Posted March 15, 2021 What prevent getting a hook set with a soft plastic hook is the worm sliding down the shank filling the hook gap. CPS solves this, cross pegging the the hook eye solves this and hooks with re barb or pins help. The hook gap should be 2X the worm body diameter. EWG means Extra Wide Gap. What I don’t like about EWG worm hooks is the hook point is even with the eye, should be above the eye. EWG hook bend acts like a wire cam rolling sideways when the bass clamps down on the hook. Both these factors result in missed hook sets imo. Tom 1 1 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted March 15, 2021 Super User Posted March 15, 2021 I used to have some round offset worm hooks where the point was pointed off to the side vs parallel with the shank. May have been Eagle Claws. They always seemed to give a solid hookset. Quote
Shimano_1 Posted March 15, 2021 Posted March 15, 2021 I've gotten to where I use the ewg hooks for all my worm fishing. Gamakatsu for anything smaller that 4/0 and Trokar or mustad grip pins for the 10 inch worms Quote
