livemusic Posted March 15, 2021 Posted March 15, 2021 From time to time, I consider replacing the 40hp Tracker (Mercury) motor on my 1997 Tracker Pro Team 17 ft boat with a new motor of the max rating, 70hp. Rather enchanted with a 4stroke but I am open to that or 2stroke. But then do you think I could sell the 40hp motor, assuming it's in good, running condition? If I had a 70 installed, would it require all new controls, wiring, cables? If my motor still had the tiller handle, it would be easier to sell but it doesn't have that. I dunno how much a new 70 installed would cost but I bet it would be $9k to $10k, maybe more. Don't know yet if this idea will dollar up decently. Other option is forget it, sell this boat and motor and buy another rig more to my liking. Having trouble thinking of buying a new boat cuz like new pickup trucks (which I also need), they are so high! I'd sure shop for used! My boat with me, alone, will go 29mph tops. I would think a 70hp would do 40mph. Speed is not my top issue but 40mph would be nice. I really just want a quiet motor that cranks every time and I don't have to have 70hp but if I were to replace, might max it out while doing it! If I put, say, a 50hp on it, it would probably bump it to, say, 33mph. Maybe somebody will say a 70 would be a bit impractical. But the boat is rated 70hp. Do you think I could sell the 40? What do you think of replacing a motor? Quote

If it were me, I'd just sell the rig and replace it with what you wanted as a whole. The issue right now is that you may have trouble finding a boat (new or used) because the watercraft market is pretty crazy right now, plus dealers/service centers probably have a long wait at the moment as well. Not sure about replacing the outboard. Maybe someone who has done that will offer their advice. Quote

I was told by a dealer if I went to a four stroke I could only go to a 60HP due to the weight factor. They told me there was so little difference between 40HP and 50HP I would have to go to a 60HP to help myself any. Quote

Someone posted a month ago that certain boat companies aren't able to full fill new boat orders until September 2021. Presumably because of demand. 1 Quote

I just missed a dream deal yesterday. Saw a FBMP post that was put on there only 14 hours earlier. I called about it and the seller responded an hour later. I was doing some research and then was notified one hour after that that the boat had sold. Before I could even get back to him! Dang, this makes me mad. Not the first time it's happened over the years. You see something posted that's a good deal, you better get in front of the buyer right away and worry about questions and answers when you're there! So if you could wait on a new one you should be able to sell yours quickly and at a higher price right now. Quote
