In past threads when talking about slow bite, tough days I've seen many recommend downsizing to a smaller bait, lighter line to draw strikes from bass.                                                             I've done this, and noticed that sometimes it works, sometimes not.                                It may not always be the best option. I've caught bass that stopped hitting a larger worm, craw, or other soft plastic by changing color, or more importantly, changing the retrieve.                                                           If I try the bigger baits first, I'll downsize to a smaller worm. If I fish the area thourouly and can't get a strike, I'll move to a new spot, and come back later.              Plus, there's always a chance you could draw a hit from a bigger fish, with a larger bait.                    Is downsizing your first choice when things get slow? And, has it worked consistently for you?

When my local waters flatten out and get calm, slowing down & / or downsizing has proven effective at times.  Often I'll do both.

Worked out right here . . .

This is probably going to be an overcorrection, but I have a body of water that I know really well considering I don't have electronics.  I feel like my years there can put me on dinks with a drop shot or senko anytime.  I'm interested in focusing on deeper water, larger baits and pushing myself to stay there.  I hope the only downsizing I'll do this year is going to the keitech finesse jig.  I plan on fighting the tough bite days with more jig time and slower presentations of medium to large soft plastics on deeper structure or cover.  I'm sure I'll fail often, but confident I'll learn more.

That's been my experience, exactly.                        jj

I'll go shorter or longer, change the profile, change weights or move based solely on instinct.

I have seen it work both ways. I usually start with a Baby Brush Hog. If nothing happens I may try different colors. Still no luck I have gone to a centipede or grub and started catching fish. There have also been times when going to an Ol Monster or even a smaller 6" worm got them to start biting.
