Super User Darth-Baiter Posted March 14, 2021 Super User Posted March 14, 2021 That’s all I threw today. I got pretty tuned up to feeling the jig. today I did well. Using a small finesse jig I got a good pile of keepers. Water is still cold, but the fish were biting. setting the hook was a thrill. So much fun! thanks you all. You helped! 5 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted March 14, 2021 Super User Posted March 14, 2021 Glad to hear the jigs worked out good. And I agree, BR is a great place to learn. Quote
Dens228 Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Like you I also love the jig! Couldn't get a bite on them yesterday in my first outing of the year, they loved the spinnerbait though. Can't wait for that first jig bite. Quote
Luke Barnes Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 I used my first full size finesse jig with a rage menace trailer yesterday. Was in the rocks so figured i would be ok because it was a football head. Looked great underwater. Lost it after about 10 minutes. Switched to a SK Bitsy Flip in Cajun craw with a TRD Crawz trailer and didn't get a sniff. Im not giving up on the jig but I, so far, have zero confidence in it. Quote
huZZah Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 I quit using football heads cause everyone said they are great for rocks...and I lost all 3. In rocks. I use arkie style only now and have better luck working it loose from everything. But I love jigs. Just not football. 2 1 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted March 14, 2021 Author Super User Posted March 14, 2021 I picked up some hand tied jigs from a local guy. so beautiful. But the fish were not having any of it. plain Jane football green pumpkins. Game on. the tungsten head was nice. I was shocked how the material transmits more tactile feedback thru the line. Quote

Super User Darth-Baiter Posted March 14, 2021 Author Super User Posted March 14, 2021 I lost my football jigs to underwater trees. Quote

I lost the only true finesse jig i have so am looking to make my own. Does the Arkie head do good for hopping and bottom bouncing like a t rig? Quote
huZZah Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 It’s what I do with it. Also swim it. For me, it’s the most versatile. I don’t do much flipping/pitching. And very little punching from bank. I have a couple of the true swim jigs as well but I just like arkies. Quote

I am not a jig expert but I think the key advantage of an Arkie is that they are a good all round shape for many applications. Quote

Rest is swimming and bouncing. Thinking of trimming strands out of the skirt and making it more finesse style. But I like how the Arkie head looks. 1 minute ago, snake95 said: Pretty sure he means Arkie style not brand. mrpao Posted March 15, 2021 Posted March 15, 2021 Is it just me, or do jigs get hung up way more than Texas rigs? It seems i get hung up at least three times more often with jigs as compared to TR. Thats one thing that discourages me from throwing the jig so much. Quote

If the snags are horrific I switch to a Texas rig. It’s tough to snag a t-rig. It’s so slender and all. Quote

I have had much better success with football jigs in scattered vegetation than rock. I mostly use footballs now for specific spots i know of in gravel pits, that appear to have either the "right" rock or no downed trees. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted March 15, 2021 Super User Posted March 15, 2021 I lost quite a handful of jigs when I started. I remembered bought like 30-40 jigs (cheap ones) just to learn how to maneuver it around rock. I agree with everyone about football jig versus arkie jig. I like arkie jig for all around but football when dragging it downhill or parallel with gravel type rock. Nowadays I got at least 2-3 fish before I lost one which is good enough for me I guess. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 15, 2021 Global Moderator Posted March 15, 2021 Jigs are my favorite baits to fish. If you're snagging in cover a lot, check out either the Trashmaster jig, or something like a Slither rig if you want a super weedless version of a jig. 1 Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted March 15, 2021 Super User Posted March 15, 2021 Another option for making a jig more 'snagless', especially in weeds, is using a tungsten version. The smaller head makes it slide through cover better. Siebert makes some great ones. https://siebertoutdoors.com/products/ols/products/tungsten-football-jig And here they are rigged up with my favorite trailer (Netbait Paca Chunk). ? 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted March 15, 2021 Super User Posted March 15, 2021 I love them too! Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted March 15, 2021 Super User Posted March 15, 2021 The only place I won't work a jig on the bottom is around rip-rap. Then I swim it. Quote
