johnsmith Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 I know its way too early to ask about frog fishing, but I'm getting my gear ready early on. I have a daiwa tatula 100 but I'm afraid the gears will pop out since I throw 50 lb braid and swing for the moon on hooksets. Any recommendation on a frog reel? Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 13, 2021 Super User Posted March 13, 2021 Aluminum frame Tatula reels have brass gears, very strong. Your rod will break before the reel. Tom 4 Quote
Finessegenics Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 Curado K! Very robust reel with a large spool, perfect for thicker diameter lines. I think I’m going to pick up a second one for myself this year too. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 13, 2021 Super User Posted March 13, 2021 You shouldn't need another reel since the 100 has brass gears. Now wanting another reel is a different story. 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 13, 2021 Super User Posted March 13, 2021 Gears pop out???? 1 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted March 13, 2021 Super User Posted March 13, 2021 No, you won't get ticks or gear failures or any problems whatsoever in any reasonable reel you might select. Wasted worry. You've got very effective shock absorbers in the rod, line, and drag. Quote
Matt_3479 Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 I’ve used the curado k for 2 seasons and last season the bantam mgl. Both are fantastic. Love the bantam Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 14, 2021 Super User Posted March 14, 2021 I have a TranX 300a for a frog reel. I have 65 lb. braid on it. I didn't choose this because of the weight of the frog (it's light) or the size of the fish (I'm in the North, so they're small) but because of the 10% rule: "if you pull in a 1 lb. bass in weeds, it's got another 9 lbs. of weeds with it. So the fish is only 10% of the load." ??? Seriously, though ..... I pull in at least as much weeds as fish. jj Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted March 14, 2021 Super User Posted March 14, 2021 I run a Revo ALX 8.0:1 spooled with Diawa J- Braid X8 after trying alot of different reels for frogging. It's 5.5 oz and gas 17 lbs of drag. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted March 14, 2021 Super User Posted March 14, 2021 200 sized reel, high speed, long handle. A few places where I fish require a long (like really long) cast, and a small reel at the end of a cast just doesn't move enough line fast enough, plus a larger body is less fatiguing to hold and fish all day. BigAngus752 Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 Your Tatula is plenty strong. That being said, all of my baitcasters are Daiwa except for my frog reel. My frog rod has a Gen4 Revo SX on it. I fish a lake that gets more than a 1/3 of it covered in lily pads. The Revo with 65lb Sufix on a heavy 7'6" Powell gets quite a workout on that lake but never fails. Coincidentally that exact reel is on clearance at Bass Pro right now: https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/abu-garcia-revo-sx-baitcast-reel-100026985-1 Quote
optimator Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 I've used a 8 speed Daiwa Fuego the last 2 years. No problems at all with straight 50lb braid. 1 Quote
Dumbbassanglr Posted March 14, 2021 Posted March 14, 2021 I recommend a shimano dc reel. It helps me chuck that frog super far and frogs can be weird to cast at times. 1 Quote

My buddy told me he found 2 bluegill and a frog the bass had spit up in his livewell yesterday. But then I live in SC. As for the reel, I use a Lew's LFS Tournament MB 7.5:1, I think. If I was to buy another it would be in the 8 range. The faster, the better for frogs. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 15, 2021 Global Moderator Posted March 15, 2021 I've got a 100 Tatula I've been using for a frog reel since they came out. Launches a frog and not seeing any issues from the rigors of frog fishing I've put it through. 3 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 15, 2021 Super User Posted March 15, 2021 I started using my Diawa Fuego for my frog reel, but I changed over to my Tatula 100 which I'm going keep on my frog rod. I would echo what Bluebasser said. 1 Quote
dj1975232 Posted March 15, 2021 Posted March 15, 2021 Not very sexy but I've had a Lew's SS LFS for the last couple years. Other than cosmetic wear and tear it has been flawless, but I do a full breakdown and cleanout/regrease at the end of the season though. Quote
