Super User LrgmouthShad Posted March 12, 2021 Super User Posted March 12, 2021 Hey ya'll, title says all. For a future purchase, looking for a rod with about a heavy action and moderate tip suited well for throwing big spinnerbaits (1oz and greater) deep. For reel I am looking at 5:0:1 shimano curado 200K. If anyone thinks this is a bad idea, please chime in about that as well. Thanks! Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 12, 2021 Super User Posted March 12, 2021 Here's my viewpoint. Spinnerbaits usually weigh 50% (roughly) more than they're advertised. The advertised weight is the lead head, not the total. (J-Mac musky spinnerbaits are the exception). So you're looking at 1.5 oz. weight, minimum. There are spinnerbaits on the market for bass (not musky) that weigh 2 oz head weight, probably close to 3 oz. total. That's swimbait territory. I'd get a swimbait rod or a light musky rod (3 oz. max weight suggestion.) As for the reel, I have a H/M fiberglass rod that I use for frogging and other stuff (trying to be versatile) and I have a TranX 300a on it. I get good result with 15 lb Big Game nylon and 65 lb. PowerPro braid. For what you're talking about, I personally would never go with a 200 size Curado. I don't believe it would last very long. And yes, I've ruined gears before. ☹️☹️☹️ Maybe get the 300 size Curado? Sorry to rain on your parade, but spending $$$ for equipment and then finding out it doesn't do what you want or doesn't last very long can be frustrating .....and expensive. Whatever you decide, I hope you have good luck! ? jj 1 Quote

Definitely get a rod that can handle more than advertised spinner. Trailers also add a lot more weight as well. I have a Lews Mh 7’ as my spinner/buzzbait rod. 15lb mono spinning setup. Works great, but there’s a couple of the frog buzzers that are dang heavy on it. Feels almost like to much. Almost. 1 Quote

Thanks for your suggestions! 1 Quote

softwateronly Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 I haven't used it, so I can't say, but the daiwa tatula 7'3" swimbait rod has kept my attention even though I don't "need" it. Looks to be a good blend of length, power, weight, and action. Maybe that fits the application and price? I have the 7'7" Mod/fast Heavy expride, rated to 2oz if you want to stay in the shimano family, but you'd end up near the rods limit and it might feel underpowered. scott 1 Quote

That's great to know, appreciate the confirmation. Thanks scott Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 14, 2021 Super User Posted March 14, 2021 I used IROD IRG745F Fred’s Magic 7’6” HFast, 1/2-2 oz for big spinner baits and several other presentations. Originally bought it for a frog rod for Clear lake. Gen III is the new model. Tom 1 Quote
