Bassin_Harrison Posted March 11, 2021 Posted March 11, 2021 I've been trying to get into jigs these last 2 seasons and I'm yet to get settled on my favorite brand or anything, mainly because I struggle to fish a jig in a lot of the small ponds I'm fishing because the bottoms are straight thick grass. The closest thing I have to a favorite is Dirty Jigs, but I haven't tried many other to be honest. I'm looking at flipping jigs since they're supposed to be the best at coming through grass, but all of Dirty Jigs flippin options seem to have really heavy wire hooks. Hoping for something a bit lighter, as I'm fishing more open water thick grass on the bottom rather than flipping into the really heavy cover. Hopefully some of you guys understand where I'm coming from, I appreciate any recommendations. I know I specified flipping jigs, but whatever you favorite grass jig is more than fine. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted March 11, 2021 Super User Posted March 11, 2021 All-Terrain "Grassmaster" Jig is best I've used. No jig is 100% clean coming through grass/weeds, but this is as close as I've found and by quite a good margin... Has a “Hidden Eye” so you don’t clog up with weeds like other jigs. 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted March 11, 2021 Super User Posted March 11, 2021 Nothing wrong with buying swim jig, they typically have heads that will get through it. There are alot of good punch jigs out there. That might be more of what you want, if the grass is that thick, you may need a heavy head and stout hook. Just use a heavier line. Quote

Dens228 Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 Arkie style or a swim jig to work through the grass. Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 Here you go, it has a recessed line tie and a lighter wire hook. https://siebertoutdoors.com/products/ols/products/swim-jig Although the heaviest weight offered is 3/8oz., With bottom hugging weeds, in my experience, the fish don't bury themselves in them. Other vegetation that grows upward has space below for bass to swim around. Bottom hugging weeds don't have that and bass will either cruise just above it, or on the edges of the growth where the bottom composition transitions. A lighter weight jig will sit on top rather than bury itself in the weeds. A slight twitch or short rip will often times be just the trigger. 1 Quote
huZZah Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 I like the arkie head for getting through the grass. Although a bladed jig, or chatter bait, works well too. Easy to forget it’s a jig. And the blade doesn’t get caught up nearly like you’d think. Quote
evo2s197 Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 Also put a bobber stop right at the top of your knot helps alot with grass and lake snot build up. 1 Quote
Bassin_Harrison Posted March 12, 2021 Author Posted March 12, 2021 Thanks for the replies guys, I'll be sure to check out all of the jigs. I've heard arkie head is the way to go, this post seems to confirm that. 47 minutes ago, papajoe222 said: Here you go, it has a recessed line tie and a lighter wire hook. Definitely like the idea of the recessed line tie, thank you Quote

I will say that a bullet shaped head or a heavy cover swim jig do an ok job, and not all grass is created equal. I find I'm either going really heavy, or really light, you want to punch through or lay on top, in between, just hangs up. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Mike L Posted March 12, 2021 Global Moderator Posted March 12, 2021 I only use them in a fairly hard bottom where the trailer and skirt can do it’s job. Most times I’ll just add a skirt to a weighted t rig when in a softer decaying bottom. Mike 1 Quote

If you don't mind me asking, what's your go to texas rig bait? Most the ponds I fish have blue gill as the main forage and murky water. I'm guessing most people would recommend sticking to the basics for colors, black/whatever for murky and green pumpkin or watermelon for clear? Quote

river-rat Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 I've been using Oldham Jigs for more than 20 years and I fish areas with a lot of grass. I use both the Eye-Max Jig and the Trailer Hitch Jig. The Eye-Max has the stouter hook but both come through grass easily and the price is very reasonable. I can assure Terry Oldham makes a first class product. Oldham Jigs 2 Quote
