We know that Zoom brush hogs and brush hog jr’s catch fish. However it looks like most manufacturers have their version of this lure. Can anybody share reasons I might be better off using another company’s version as it may offer something different? What brand to try and why and when? I don’t know anything about this style lure but I am wanting to expand on it. Thanks

Zoom’s have been a tried and true product for years.

If there’s no reason to change I tend to stay with what I know.

Regular brush hogs on a swing jig is a great combination.

I agree with you Mike but I don’t wanna miss out on some interesting aspect of a variation if there is one.

If you want some variation use a razor blade, or scissors to cut the little appendages away from the body. Do it on the nose side and you'll get a ton more action than separating them toward the tail. ?

Big Bite Baits offers their version in big packs, which is very appealing to me so I can buy a bait once and not have to worry about running out for a good while. I've had very good success with them. I wish they came in solid black like the Zoom Brush Hog though. A full size solid black Brush Hog is one of my big fish baits during the heat of the summer.

I LOVE Big Bite Baits, but I have not had as much success with them as I have had with the Zoom. However, @Bluebasser86 is a hell of a fisherman so he can' be steering you wrong. I would guess it is like most things fishing related, we tend to use confidence baits more often.

Most   of the time I use the Brush hogs on my home made jika rigs.  If I want to change something up and still stay in creature bait mode - I've had some success with the Netbait Mad Paca and the Berkley Power Bait Power Hawg.

I like the BBB version too.  The Strike King KVD Game Hawg and the Yum Christie Critter may also be worth looking at. They're slightly bigger and bulkier than the baby brush hog, but not nearly as big as a full-sized brush hog.

Reaction Innovation has the Man Bear Pig.  It has a wedge on the “head” that helps hold the bait from sliding down with an EWG style hook. The body is also flatter and has some glide when using lighter bullet weights.  I’m glad Zoom came out with the 5 inch BH and expect it to be really good as well. Great options

I find the multi appendage a lot of things going on baits like the baby brush hogs are like jack of all trades, master of none. I still pitch them sometimes, but I fish them less and less every year. Of course a pair of scissors can turn one into just about anything in a pinch.

I’ve only fished the Baby and Tiny Baby brush hogs (river smallies). In the few colors I use they work. No reason to switch.

But IF I were to try something similar it would be the Berkley version. Seem to do real well with Berkley stuff. No plans on that yet. If I try something else than I have to deal with the mental part of it.

Baby brush hog is my go to, caught so many fish on them over the years. However this season I am interested in trying the KVD Game Hawg, I don’t think it will replace the zooms but I will give it a try.

Maybe that slight difference will make the difference on that particular day.

I stopped using the baby ones all together and only use the standard size ever since the Rage bug came out.

I know they’re a completely different bait, but something that size I’m convinced it’s more about the action that gets them vs the size or bulk.
To me the standard size is a kicker fish bait that in certain conditions has no equal.

I took a chance and bought a 100 pack of big bite baits 4" Creature bait last year. Always have good luck with zoom, but it was way cheaper so figured why not. It was a huge producer for me last year, so I bought another 100 pack. Colors are junebug red and watermelon red, both produce very well. Same as their yo mama bait. They have a scent that smells almost like black licorice to me. Either way the bass eat them.

I'll also say for some reason I've caught very few, if any fish on the larger brush hog baits. The only one that's worked has been the baby brush hog, so that's what I stick with

I’ve always had good luck with black blue shadow cristy critters.  That was one of the first brush hog type baits I’ve used.  I guess as to reason why to use them I’ve yet to see anybody else make a color like black blue shadow in a brush hog style bait.

I used and had a lot of success with baby brush hogs. I had no reason to try anything different but you know how it goes - you see it in the bait shop and decide "it cant hurt".  In this situation it was KVD's game hawg.  They look similar enough how different could it be? Not much to me, but the fish see something because these Game hawgs outfish them by a lot for me!  I wish they didnt, they cost more per pack, you get 4 baits LESS per pack and they tear up more easily... but man these things catch fish.
