It has been a long time since I tossed one of those. But red and white striped was the preferred.

I use them mostly for pike and pickerel in fresh water. I do catch bass occasionally on them. Slow steady works most days slight speed up or slow down is the ticket sometimes. Much like JBs fish will prefer something different on different days. Spoons are speed and rod sensitive. I fish a Johnson spoon with a feathered treble trailer for bass and think that is a better option than the Dardevle.

   Oh .... heck ..... YES!

I've been catching them on the 1/4 Spinnie this last week, with a few on the 2/5. Today I went out with a red-and-white 1 oz. Weedless, but no dice. I have about (4) 1 oz., maybe (10) 3/4, (6) 2/5 oz., and just a few 1/4 oz. Best color is Purple Rain, followed by Pearl, Pearl Clown, Grey Ghost, Black Betty, Hammered Nickle, Hammered Nickle & Blue, Red/White and Chartreuse w/red dots. I have tried Pumpkinseed and Crawdad, too, but no dice. I also tried the 3/4 oz. Klicker, but that was a disappointment.

I twitch them, also called pulsing them, 90% of the time, whether I retrieve high or lower in the water column.

I also use the CopECat, 1/3 to 4/5, and the 1/4 DevleDog. I have heavier DevleDogs, but they retrieve too slow and too low for where I fish.

Like someone said, their biggest competitor is the Johnson Silver Minnow, which I also use in 3/4 and 1-and-1/8th. I favor the Eppinger because they have more colors, which to me means more degrees of contrast, not inherent color.

I'm so glad you asked!  ???   ???                    jj

Three colors. Red & white with nickel back. Five of diamonds with brass back. Red & white with copper back. These three colors cover all water coloration & light visibility, i.e. full sun/cloudy conditions and tannic versus clear water. Steady retrieve with intermittent stoppage to let the spoon drop & flutter before continuing the retrieve. Most fish that follow a spoon will hit it when you stall the retrieve.

I can honestly say I’ve never fished a daredevil spoon. I’m so hooked on lil cleo’s, it’s hard to switch.

Now all you guys who swear by red and white spoons, are you fishing other types of red and white lures? Or just this spoon?

Just curious, for whatever reason red just doesn’t work for me.

I have relatives and friends that use them for this purpose too. Pike are notorious for attacking shiny flashy lures and this fits that foot print well, plus it’s very durable.

I still have a few but I don’t really use them for bass fishing. Can’t say I’ve ever caught a bass on one.

Red and white seem to be a common pattern in fishing lures but I don’t use it that often for bass. Of course, I’ve caught some bass on red and white daredevles but maybe I should throw it more. Its primarily a pike thing for me. They like just about anything that’s flashy. I don’t think they’re after it because of the color. The nickel or brass on the back of the spoon is probably what attracts them.

The lures I do use for bass with that combination are mostly white, with some hints of red. I’ll throw a white spinnerbait with a red zman split tail trailer. Or an all white popper that has a red belly/lip. There’s no rhyme or reason behind this for me. But I’ve heard that fish key on that red spot when they see it on a white lure. I figure it can’t hurt. Maybe it’s the contrast?

Good stuff man. Sorry I’m in “like” purgatory today. Gave too many out.

I do well with bright silver and green lil cleo’s. Silver and blues as well. Mostly bass and trout will hammer 1/3 oz spoon.

I don’t do well with reds or orange in any lure.

If I go light colors it’s always predominantly white.

Blues, purples, green and black are probably the only 5 colors I fish. Mostly a confident thing.

Great post. ?

About 3-4 years ago eppenger came out with a limited run of  new spoons.  They came out once a month for the whole summer.  At The time you had to order these special spoons directly from eppenger. So a group of us on Michigan sportsman bought them every month.  I lasted the first 2 months.  That brown and red one was also a good bass color.

Basically, if they sold enough of these spoons they would make them a regular production run. I ordered the first 2 of the new color pack.  That sunfish spoon was a pike killer and I caught a lot of smallies on that chartreuse and black one.  I fished them a lot that summer but, kinda got a way from them the last 2 years.

ive always been partial to Eppinger as they are a very old lure mfg from Dearborn Mi.  Also my grandfather took the Epoinger family out on a salmon charter in late 80’s early 90’s. The family gave brought and him boxes of spoons  when they got on the boat.  He still has a lot of the old ones.

Not the Daredevil but I do fish a similar one. The Johnson Sprite spoon is a regular casting spoon that I keep in the boat and use when fish on schooling on shad. Plain silver or gold both work. I like them because I can fire long cast to reach schools that pop up out of reach of other baits.
