Hello,

This is the story of our first time fishing.

Early on Saturday morning (3/5/21) we tried lure fishing from this crap pond near our house because we didn't have any hooks.  My son, Carlos (he is 10-years old,) snagged his line and lost the line and lure.  He got really upset because he had named the lure.  We told him not to get attached to his crank bait.

Late in the evening, around 4:30pm we went to Jim Baker Reservoir.  We tried bait fishing from the dock, which was a bad idea as we both snagged and lost our lines.  Carlos’ reel got really tangled and took me over an hour to fix.  After losing my line I rebuilt it with crank bait and Carlos took it to a spot a few yards from the dock and snagged it losing the entire line, lure and all.

Very frustrating and disappointing first time out!

I wanted to buy a lure retrieval tool but from what I've found through research and this forum so far is that those only work from boats and not the bank/shore.

We're going to try a different part of that same lake in a few more weeks.

Think about other baits that are user friendly and less likely to snag.

Baits like poppers, top water Jerkbaits, really any top water.

Learn how to rig plastics weedless where the hook is not exposed.

This would be my top choice for you and your boy to enjoy fishing and catch fish but you may need to upgrade your equipment.....it's a weightless Senko, texas rigged. 20210309_142908.thumb.jpg.f8fa37892eddf1ed96484d7e533ca88f.jpg

Do plastics need sinkers as well as a hook?

Not always - weightless plastics rigged as Bird showed...whether worms, craws, whatever...are a valid technique.

Don't give up! Fishing is designed so that the first day is rough, which gets rid of all the anglers who aren't serious about it ;)

I agree with Bird - try some weedless setups. Senko type baits rigged as shown above will be much less frustrating.
