Thoughts on using a St Croix Premier 7' MH fast 3/8-3/4 spinning rod for jerk baits?

Too long, otherwise GTG.

What are you thinking 6'10"?

I would go 6'6"-6'8" with a short butt. The working end won't be much shorter than a 7' rod with a "standard" length rod. There is a lot of preference involved of course, but I find that the tip down technique, plus the action one is trying to achieve makes shorter better. If you are fishing from the deck of a bass boat, a couple of extra inches usually work ok, but I find (specially in cold water) the shorter rod lends to a better lure action.

Do you like an xtra fast action vs fast action?

The smaller the JB the faster I like the rod, but you can't go by the label on the rod, because there  is no standard.

Basswhole! is spot on,  see if you can get your hands on a Dobyns Fury 662 spinning rod. It's a great rod for what the op is talking about.

The spinning rod that I use for throwing jerk baits is an older 6'3" Shimano, ( right now I forget which grade ).    Hard to describe the action - kinda medium with an extra fast tip?   Anyway, I like it because when I'm doing that sharp little downward jerk, I'm not slapping the side of the boat, like I would be doing with a longer rod.  If I could find a 6' rod with the same action, etc,  I'd use it.  I've tried longer rods and I liked that I could get a little better distance, but after a while the tip would break right where I'd smacked it against the side of the boat when I wasn't paying strict attention.

I think I've decided on picking up a St. Croix Bass X 6'8" medium/extra-fast spinning for jerkbait fishing (often recommended as a budget rod for jerkbait fishing). Now I just need to decide on a reel that will balance well with it and won't break the bank!

SLX XT or 70MGL. Matches the rod, too.

Unfortunately I'm looking at the spinning option, not casting. I'm thinking the new Daiwa Legalis LT would match well with it, or maybe keep it classic with a Pflueger President.

If you can wait, that awesome blue and silver Legalis that will match it comes out this spring according to TW.

Too heavy, go with a M or ML.  Length is ok unless your trying to get max depth.  Go with a 6'6 in that case

The new model Presidents have had a down-turn. As the President XT is just a President with some add-ons, I personally wouldn't go less than a Supreme now-days for a Pflueger spinning reel.

The 7’ mh st croix spinner is very stiff and very heavy, you will likely not enjoy jerkbaiting nor do it effectively, you’ll be better off with their medium or medium-light. I actually used it for light frogging and t-rigging back in the day, sold it a few years back. Length is entirely personal preference, I use a 7 footer for jerkbaiting, but then again I’m a bit taller than most people. I prefer it over the usual shorter recommendations for casting distance and quicker and surer hooksets.

I know many people who only throw jerkbaits on spinning rods. Personally usually I throw smaller jerkbaits on spinning and bigger on casting, but that is solely because I like jerkbaits on casting. I use the Megabass Levante Whipsnake for spinning jerkbaits, it is barely a step up from a crappie rod and a true-finesse rod and was designed for dropshotting. I recommend you use a true-finesse spinning rod and not a power-finesse spinning rod because it is much more likely that the action will be far superior for twitching, jerking, & ripping.

I was looking at the Whipsnake.

6’6” - 6’10” medium (insert brand of your choice) with a fairly stiff tip.

I had Kistler build me a spinning version of their 6’9” KLX casting rod. Kistler calls it mod-fast. I find it perfect for jerkbaits.

Opinion: Only an Islander fan would do that. Too long, and too stiff for any not on the larger side. On the other hand, only one way to find out if it will work for YOU. Potvin Sucks!
