928JLH Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 Located large pods of bass off of mainlake points suspended at 15-20' Any tips to get these fish to bite? Tried Keitechs/Underspins, Lipless, chatter bait, and large swimbait glide bait. Absolutely nada. Water temp 58-60. 1 Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted March 7, 2021 Super User Posted March 7, 2021 Maybe something like a tailspin would work? Or how about dropping vertically on them with Ned or damiki rig? 1 Quote
928JLH Posted March 7, 2021 Author Posted March 7, 2021 I'm going to try a ned tomorrow and vertically fish the little 2.8 keitech. Packed a couple spybaits. I haven't fished the Damiki rig yet but will try. Quote

Super User jimmyjoe Posted March 7, 2021 Super User Posted March 7, 2021 Suspended, you say? Try a flutter spoon. Drop it (literally) right in the middle of them. It's not necessary to use the big 2 or 3 oz. stuff if you don't want to. Use a Flutterchuck or Milwaukee Minnow. Good luck! jj 1 Quote
Emiliano Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I agree with the above post, try deep jerkbaits (LC staysee 90, MB 110 +2 or +3 .....) and fine tune with your cadence or go with little blade baits or lipless with yo-yo retrieve Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 7, 2021 Super User Posted March 7, 2021 Late per spawn bass or carp. Havasu has Smallmouth and Largemouth and at 58-60 degrees you should be seeing cruisers and early male bed fish. If no cruisers or smaller male bass in 2’- 8’ back in coves you may be metering carp. I would back off the the points and make long cast from shallow to deep water work a 3/8 oz spider jig (twin tail Yamamoto Hulls grub 4” #157 or 221 ) uphill. Yamamoto Mucho Fat Neko In Houdini with 3/32 nose weight wacky rigged may also work for both suspended bass and cruisers. If the water was colder spoon them? Tom 1 Quote

Tom Definitely lots of little buck largemouth in the tullies. Smallies are bedding now. I must have seen 15+ beds the last 2 days including a few with the female still locked. I think you are correct they're probably carp. I'm going to work harder to try and find the pods of big females. The full moon is the end of the month so hopefully there's time to get a PB. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 8, 2021 Global Moderator Posted March 8, 2021 I'd target other fish. Those ones are going to be pretty close to impossible to get to bite unless they're around a bunch of bait or suspended up high on top of some cover like deep trees. 1 Quote

Im in agreement, I’ve thrown every presentation at fish in this scenario with not much luck at all. I went yesterday and could only find fish in my lake suspended in high in 15-20 feet of water on main lake points. I threw jerkbaits, crank baits, swim baits, tailspins, neko rigs. Struck out. 42-45 degree water, nice chop on the water, partly cloudy, stable weather we’ve had. Still zip. Quote

In my mind these fish are there for a reason and unless they are busting on a ball of bait, it seems they are at least in a neutral mood and perhaps more often than not - negative. What I would suggest is to note the depth that they are suspended at and then locate some structure close my that's at the same depth. Bass will often move horizontally in the water column to go and eat. So a point, a hump, a steep bank or drop off could be where they head next to chow. Maybe you could be there waiting for them. Good Luck A-Jay 3 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted March 9, 2021 Global Moderator Posted March 9, 2021 Dead sticking a fluke or weightless worm is what works for me in that scenario. Our fish suspend almost all the time, and the carp suck on the bottom or the top 1 Quote
Shimano_1 Posted March 10, 2021 Posted March 10, 2021 I agree with a couple others. Id move on and target some fish that are in a better mood. Id imagine in that water temp there's a good majority moving up shallower and easier to catch! 1 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted March 10, 2021 Super User Posted March 10, 2021 Deep diving crankbaits. I agree with the others that those fish are tough to catch, and you're probably wasting your time. But the only time I ever can get a bite in those situations, it's with a deep diving crankbait. Be prepared to cast all day and maybe you'll get one or two. Then again, crankbaits are my confidence bait, so maybe that advice says more about me than the fish. 1 Quote
